The Hawks have been an interesting team to watch since last season as the rumors kept building by the week that the expectation is the team wants to separate Murray and fellow star guard in Trae Young. Charania would remind McAfee and the viewers that Los Angeles was pursuing Murray as early as the trade deadline last season. “One name they did pursue last season at the trade deadline that teams expect to come up again in trade conversations over the next week or so, and makes sense for the Lakers is DeJounte Murray with the Hawks,” Charania said. “That’s someone that you think about in the next week or so, not only with the number one overall pick, but they potentially have a decision to make with Trae Young, with DeJounte Murray, which player stays, which player goes, and the Lakers have maintained a level of interest in DeJounte Murray over the last several months.”

The Pat McAfee Show: “The pressure is on the Lakers front office to make changes to this roster.. They have to be aggressive and I think Dejounte Murray will come up in trade conversations” @ShamsCharania #PMSLive -via Twitter / June 21, 2024
The Hawks fielded offers for Murray leading up to this past winter’s trade deadline but couldn’t find one worth executing. During that time, they spoke with the Knicks, league sources said, but the two sides never got close to an agreement. Part of Murray’s appeal to New York was his flippability; the Knicks could trade for Murray at the deadline, then include him in another deal for a star this summer or next season. -via New York Times / June 14, 2024
Now, it remains unclear how the Hawks will be proceeding. But for NBA insider and analyst Bill Simmons, the answer has become more clear. Speaking on his eponymous podcast, Simmons revealed that a few of his sources have indicated that the Hawks, more likely than not, are going to move on from both Trae Young and Dejounte Murray this offseason. “The thing I keep hearing from people is that if it was an over of one on FanDuel, Trae and Murray get traded and the over’s one and you could bet under, push, or over, that some people seem to think both of those guys are getting traded is a thing I’ve heard,” Simmons said on the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast. “From different people that don’t know each other, who know things, [they said that the Hawks are] just like, ‘You know what, we’ve got the number one pick, this didn’t work, we got to the Conference Finals that one time, let’s just try to blow this up.’” -via Clutch Points / June 11, 2024
