NBA Insider Suggests Potential Major Move for Hawks Star This Summer

Last summer, the Atlanta Hawks made a major move when they traded Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans in favor of Trae Young. And according to NBA insider Bobby Marks, the Hawks could be in line for another busy offseason this year.

According to Marks (subscription required), Young is a player to keep an eye on in the offseason. As Marks puts it, the Hawks have a decision to make on Young, who has a player option for the 2026-27 season. The Oklahoma alum is eligible for a contract extension in the offseason. However, if the two sides cannot come to terms on a new deal, a trade could be inevitable.

“Besides Durant, keep an eye on contract negotiations between Trae Young and the Hawks. Young has two years left on his contract after this season and can be a free agent in 2026 if he declines his player option. The four-time All-Star is eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million extension in the offseason.”

Another Team Considered a Trae Young Trade This Year

Recently, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that the San Antonio Spurs considered trading for Young before they landed De’Aaron Fox.

“I am going to pivot to Trae Young. That guy is a fierce competitor, he wants to win. I am going to say it again, he wants to win so the direction of the Hawks I would say is very unique considering they know where he stands and they know what he wants to accomplish. I will say this, before the San Antonio Spurs made the move for De’Aaron Fox, they were considering Trae Young,” Haynes said.

“But with the way that the Spurs are set up right now, they are not set up to start trying to win games and contend now so there was never really a hurry to try and bring in an established point guard to move onto the next phase, but De’Aaron Fox kinda fell in their lap and he picked them as the sole team that he wanted to play with so they chose him and it was a much easier route to get De’Aaron, but Trae Young was on the San Antonio Spurs radar.”

With Fox now in San Antonio, it is highly unlikely the Spurs will pursue a trade for Young once again.

The Last Word On Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks

Young is no stranger to trade rumors. Before the Hawks traded Murray last year, many speculated that Yong could be on the move instead. Ultimately, the Hawks chose Young over Murray.

This season, despite Young’s solid individual performance, the Hawks are 26-29 and own the No. 8 seed in the East. They are not a title contender and could miss the playoffs entirely this year. Naturally, given Young’s contract situation, it could make sense for the Hawks to deal him this summer. However, there is a lot of basketball remaining. Regardless, it will be worth monitoring Young and his status in Atlanta the rest of the way.
