Thomas Sorber Getting Draft Lottery Buzz

June 22, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Georgetown freshman Thomas Sorber hasn’t been a secret for some time. While his 2024-25 campaign went under the radar in medias res, he started to generate buzz around the 2025 NBA Draft Combine. The most skilled big man the Hoyas have had since 2010 No. 7 pick Greg Monroe, Sorber’s tape is even better sight than his numbers. As he averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals per game last season, that’s saying something.

Considering that, Sorber “is drawing the interest of several teams in the lottery and also just outside the lottery” reports NJ Advance Media’s Adam Zagoria. Specifically, he’s  “attracted interest from the Atlanta Hawks (which pick at Nos. 13 and 22) and San Antonio Spurs (No. 14) – the last two picks in the lottery. Sorber is also drawing attention from the Minnesota Timberwolves (No. 17) and Brooklyn Nets (Nos. 19, 26 and 27),”

Atlanta Hawks

With Clint Capela and Larry Nance Jr. both candidates to leave the Hawks in free agency, they’re one of the teams who’ll need to fortify their big man depth in free agency. Yet, Sorber is also skilled enough to compete with Onyeka Okongwu for the starting spot. In fact, the nimble 19-year-old has Okongwu’s versatility but Capela’s size. If he’s really the best of both worlds at the next level, Atlanta will be much better off for it.

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs will see centers Sandro Mamukelashvili and Bismack Biyombo become free agents this offseason. Victor Wembanyama’s season-ending blood clot diagnosis increases the importance of addressing their positional depth. With the league trending back towards the use of traditional frontcourts and both Wembanyama and Sorber theoretically capable of playing power forward, their ability to play together could also appeal to San Antonio.

Minnesota Timberwolves

One major point of discussion is the possibility that Naz Reid leaves the Minnesota Timberwolves in free agency. In that event, Sorber should be an acceptable replacement for the 2024 Sixth Man of the Year. From their comparative size to style to skillset, he’s a very sensible fit pick for the Wolves.

Because Sorber can play center, it’s worth noting that Rudy Gobert will be 33 years old by the end of this month. It might not be next season, but he’s certainly on the other end of his career. All in all, Sorber’s a prospect who could make an immediate impact in Minnesota due to positional need. His long-term upside is just worth real consideration as well.

Brooklyn Nets

Like the aforementioned teams, the Nets will have a key backup big man enter free agency this offseason: Day’Ron Sharpe. Though it’s a more ambitious aspiration, Brooklyn also has to decide whether Nic Claxton is really the franchise cornerstone that they thought he was after an underwhelming 2024-25 season. In any case, with the Nets in a rebuild, Sorber’s development will probably be prioritized regardless.
