Not ideal.

The Atlanta Hawks opened their preseason in Miami for a matchup with the Heat on Monday, and things could have gone better. Star guard Trae Young exited the game with a right quad contusion after a collision in the third quarter.

Shortly after Young went to the locker room, the Hawks provided an update:

To what degree this injury will impact Young going forward obviously remains to be seen, as the Hawks could have simply removed him out of precaution due to it being a preseason game. Young finished the night with 14 points and three assists in 18 minutes.

The Hawks will face the Cleveland Cavaliers at home on Wednesday evening in their second preseason game, and now obviously may be without Young, potentially on top of some other guys like Clint Capela, Kevin Huerter and De’Andre Hunter who are all being brung along slower as they rehab from injuries lingering over from last season.

It’s far too early to speculate on Young’s status for the season opener later this month on Oct. 21 vs. Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. The Hawks have three more preseason games after tonight, with the exhibition games concluding on Oct. 14 when Atlanta hosts the Miami Heat.

Stay tuned for updates.
