Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks have begun working together on a trade, according to Shams Charania. Young is represented by Aaron Mintz, Austin Brown, and Drew Morrison of CAA, who are amicably working with Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh on a resolution.
The two sides have had positive talks dating back to when the Hawks decided not to offer Young a contract extension in the offseason. Young could become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason should he decline his $49 million option for 2026-27.
Young has been Atlanta’s franchise player since 2018 when they traded down from No. 3 with the Dallas Mavericks to select him instead of Luka Doncic. Young led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2022, but the results have been mixed in recent seasons. Young was an All-NBA selection in 2022.
Young missed several weeks earlier this season with a right MCL sprain and is now out with a right quad contusion.
Marc Stein previously reported that the Washington Wizards have held discussions with the Hawks on a Young trade involving CJ McCollum.
