The Atlanta Hawks are more open to discussing trades for Trae Young than ever before, but league sources indicate his market is widely considered minimal, sources tell Sam Amick of The Athletic.
Atlanta went 13-9 without Young after he sprained his right MCL in late October but is 0-5 since his return. The Hawks have lost 10 of their past 12 games and seven straight overall.
League sources say the Hawks saw promising signs during Young’s absence, particularly from fifth-year forward Jalen Johnson. The team’s strong play without Young has increased internal discussions about his future, though clarity on legitimate suitors remains absent.
The Hawks’ decision not to extend Young opened the door for trade speculation. He can opt out and become a free agent this summer, with his player option worth $48.9 million.
“Trae is an extremely difficult player to win at the highest level with,” one rival scout told The Athletic.
Young’s desire for a new contract at star-player level has created trepidation around the league. The 27-year-old four-time All-Star’s situation may need to be resolved in the offseason rather than before the trade deadline.
Atlanta has expressed interest in Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford as Kristaps Porzingis continues dealing with illness. Porzingis has missed 14 of the previous 15 games.
However, Hawks sources strongly disputed reports that they would include 2024 No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher in any Gafford trade. Team officials remain optimistic about Risacher’s development despite his struggles in his second season.
The Mavericks are seeking young prospects and expiring contracts in Gafford discussions. Like Young, Gafford is extension-eligible this summer and can opt out in summer 2027.
Atlanta officials want to see more of the current roster together before making major decisions. The combination of health issues and Young’s contract situation is creating pressure for the front office to act soon.
