The 2023 draftee made his pro debut for Augusta
A 2023 draftee, Garrett Baumann is a 6’8” right-hander with some hype, thanks to a mid-90s fastball and slider combo.
How Acquired
The Braves selected Baumann in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft. He was given an overslot signing bonus of $747,500, on and above the slot value of $521,000.
Preseason report card
Since Baumann didn’t join the Braves organization until the summer, there was no preseason write up on him.
What we saw in 2023
We honestly did not see much from Baumann in the Braves organization in 2023 as he pitched just two innings in a single start for the club. He was dominant at the high school level this season, though, as he had a 1.21 ERA, pitched 46 ⅓ innings and struck out 73 batters according to MaxPreps.
2024 outlook
Seeing as Baumann is a high school prospect, it would be a bit surprising if the Braves do anything with him outside of starting him in Rookie ball or Single-A. He probably won’t get to High-A or anything. Sure, the organization was aggressive with AJ Smith-Shawver, but Owen Murphy, a high school arm the Braves took in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft, started his second season in Single-A, which is where he headed post-draft, before ending the year in High-A.
Baumann hasn’t yet registered on prospect lists for the most part, and is going to need to do something to distinguish himself to make headway in the organization.
