Two very promising young left handers will take the mound today in Atlanta (we hope).
The Braves were able to win in dramatic fashion last night as Brian McCann walked off the Marlins at nearly 1 AM after a long rain delay.
Today Atlanta will play a matinee with the Fish and will be sending Max Fried to the mound for his first start since the death of his good friend Tyler Skaggs. Fried has been much improved of late after struggling through early June. The big lefty’s ERA sits at 4.04 (ironic) which is well above his peripheral stats like FIP which has him at 3.80. This means he’s had some rough luck this season.
Fried sits just 10 strikeouts away from 100 on the season.
On the other side Miami will send another talented left hander to the mound in Caleb Smith. Smith has been on the IL since June 6th due to left hip issues, but was have a fantastic season before that. His 2019 ERA is a cool 3.41, but his big issue is the home run ball. Smith has already allowed 13 bombs in just 66 innings this season and going up against this powerful Braves lineup could be an issue there. He does feature some swing and miss pitching though as his K/9 sits at 11.18.
Either way this should be another great matchup on the mound after last night featured just one run scored combined. Make sure to lock in at 4:10 on Fox Sports South and hope the sunshine comes out.
