Cookie Carrasco comes to Cobb County
The Atlanta Braves are currently in dire straits when it comes to their starting rotation. Injuries have absolutely ravaged the squad and as a result, they’ve had to scramble for some starters to fill their rotation in the middle of the season. None of this is ideal but the Braves have got to do what they’ve got to do in order to make sure that they at least have starters to hold the fort until the Braves can get most of their starting pitchers back.
Yesterday, the Braves added Erick Fedde and today, they’ve brought in Carlos Carrasco in exchange for cash considerations and a Player To Be Named Later from the New York Yankees. Jack Curry of the YES Network was the first to report the deal.
The Yankees have traded Carlos Carrasco to the Braves for a PTBNL or cash.

Carrasco has only made six starts this season with his best start being a five-inning stint on Aprill 25 where kept the Blue Jays off of the scoreboard while striking out two batters, walking two and giving up three hits. Outside of that (and a solid performance against the Royals on April 14), it’s been a tough year for Carrasco — really, it’s been a tough three seasons for Carrasco since his last good year in 2022.
Ever since then, Carrasco has has produced a 6.14 ERA and a 5.35 FIP over 47 starts and 225.2 innings pitched since the start of the 2023 season. During that same period, Carrasco has produced a grand total of -0.3 WAR according to FanGraphs. So if you’re expecting Carrasco to be a savior, you might want to think again.
What he should do is hopefully give the Braves at least five innings in any given start he makes before making his exit. While this isn’t the sexiest trade in the world, it’s something that makes sure that the lights are still on for the Braves — even if those lights are flickering and extremely dim.
