A trade! But the more significant news is unfortunate.
The Atlanta Braves have acquired veteran starter Erick Fedde from the St. Louis Cardinals. Unfortunately, to make room for Eric Fedde, the Braves placed starter Grant Holmes on the 60-day IL.
The #Braves today acquired RHP Erick Fedde and cash considerations from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred RHP Grant Holmes to the 60-day injured list.

The acquisition of Fedde is simply out of necessity for the Braves. With the injury to Holmes yesterday, none of the members of the Braves’ start of the season rotation are currently healthy. As a result, the Braves needed more options that could take the mound as a starter, and Fedde was available after recently losing his rotation spot and being DFA’d by the Cardinals.
Fedde had a breakout year in 2024 for both the White Sox and Cardinals. However, this season, Fedde has struggled from the start. He currently has an ERA north of 5, with an FIP and xFIP north of 5 as well. There is not a lot of hope when looking at the underlying metrics, which is why the Cardinals were ok adding money to Fedde in the trade. Fedde will be a free agent after this season.
Source: As part of their deal with the Braves, the Cardinals will cover the majority of what remains of Erick Fedde’s $7.5 million salary in 2025.

Of course, the more significant news is the fact that Grant Holmes was added to the 60-day Injured List less than 24 hours after he complained of elbow tightness after last night’s game. While it is certainly important to wait for more details, the move to the 60-day IL likely ends the season for Holmes and could be an indication he may be out for much longer than that. Hopefully good news will follow in the next day or so, but this development is less than encouraging in a season that just keeps getting worse for the Braves.
