The Braves drafted Schwellenbach in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He underwent Tommy John surgery shortly after the draft and didn’t make his professional debut until last season. He began 2024 at High A Rome where he posted a 2.53 ERA and tallied 34 strikeouts in 32 innings across six starts. That led to a promotion to Double A Mississippi where he has yet to allow a run in his first 13 innings. Schwellenbach ranked third in Battery Power’s preseason top 30 list.
Wednesday’s rotation spot was the one formally held by Bryce Elder who was demoted last week. Ray Kerr started in his place on the road trip but struggled. Schwellenbach isn’t currently on the 40-man roster and will need to be added. The Braves have yet to announce the move so nothing is official yet.
