Baumann struck out five without issuing a walk in his start
(25-41) Gwinnett Stripers 3, (36-28) Memphis Redbirds 8 (Completion of June 12 Game)
- Nacho Alvarez Jr., 3B: 2-3, 2B, 2 R, 2 BB
- Carlos Rodriguez, RF: 1-2, 2 BB
- Zach Thompson, SP: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 5 ER, 5 BB, K
Game one for the Stripers went better than their second game on Friday — albeit not by much as Gwinnett fell 8-3 in this one.
The Stripers actually held the first lead in this one after Nacho Alvarez Jr. scored on a James McCann groundout to make it a 1-0 game.
That lead didn’t last long though, as Memphis tagged Gwinnett for six runs in the top of the third — five of which came against Stripers starter Zach Thompson — and never looked back.
The Stripers got one run in the bottom of the third as Alvarez Jr. scored on a wild pitch to make it a 6-2 deficit, and another run in the home half of the fifth as Stuart Fairchild crossed the plate on a Carlos Rodriguez groundout.
(25-41) Gwinnett Stripers 1, (37-28) Memphis Redbirds 8
- Conner Capel, RF: 2-2, R
- Jarred Kelenic, CF: 1-3, RBI
- Davis Daniel, SP: 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 4 ER, BB, K
As mentioned above, game two did not go in favor of Gwinnett at all as Memphis held the Stripers to just one run on five hits in the night.
Davis Daniel provided a bit of length to save the bullpen by going five innings. However, the Redbirds tagged him for six runs — four earned — to take a 6-0 lead. Memphis would eventually tack on two additional runs to extend their lead to 8-0 before the Stripers finally broke through and crossed the plate.
The lone run of the game for Gwinnett came in the bottom of the sixth as Conner Capel scored on a Jarred Kelenic double to make it an 8-1 game which held as the final.
(25-31) Columbus Clingstones 0, (27-32) Knoxville Smokies 1 (SUSPENDED)
- JR Ritchie, SP: 3 IP, 4 H, ER, BB, 4 K
Mother Nature got in the way of what was turning out to be a solid start from JR Ritchie. In his three innings of work before the game was suspended due to rain, the righty scattered four hits while allowing one run and striking out four.
The game will be continued tomorrow before Saturday’s regularly scheduled game.
(28-33) Rome Emperors 4, (40-20) Greensboro Grasshoppers 2
- Jose Devers, 2B: 1-2, 2B, RBI
- Patrick Clohisy, CF: 1-4, RBI
- Garrett Baumann, SP: 5 IP, 6 H, 5 K
Despite Braves minor league teams playing eight total games on Friday, Rome managed to notch one of only two wins on the day, beating Greensboro 4-2 through a rain delay.
While the Emperors offense managed to out score the Grasshoppers while failing to outhit them, the real star of the day for Rome was starter Garrett Baumann. Across five innings of work, Baumann scattered six hits and struck out five while holding Greensboro scoreless. What was even more encouraging is the fact that he also did not issue a single walk on the night as well. Over his last three starts, Baumann has issued just two walks in 15.2 innings pitched.
At the plate, Patrick Clohisy and Jose Devers — who is on a rehab assignment — were the heroes, as both players drove in a run for Rome in the 4-2 win.
(30-29) Augusta GreenJackets 1, (31-30) Charleston RiverDogs 5
- Colby Jones, 3B: 1-3, RBI
- Rayven Antonio, SP: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Augusta was limited to just one run on four hits in this one as the GreenJackets ultimately came up short in their 4-1 loss against Charleston on Friday.
Augusta actually struck first, scoring their only run of the night in the top of the first inning. John Gil and Owen Carey laced back-to-back singled to lead off the game before moving up a base on an Isaiah Drake groundout. Gil then scored on a Colby Jones groundout to make it a 1-0 game in favor of the GreenJackets. Aside from those two singles, Augusta was only able to tally two additional hits the rest of the night in the loss.
Meanwhile on the mound, starter Rayburn Antonio managed to toss 4.1 innings, but scattered five hits and allowed four runs in this one while striking out five. He also walked three batters, which didn’t help his case at all. Charleston also managed to add on another run off of reliever Trent Buchanan to extend their lead to 5-1 in the late going.
(11-18) FCL Braves 4, (17-11) FCL Rays 5 (GAME 1)
- Mario Baez, 2B: 1-3, 2 RBI, BB
- John Estevez, RF: 1-3, RBI, R, BB
- Yorvi Pirela, SP: 4 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, BB, K
While the FCL squad lost in game one of the second doubleheader of the day for Braves affiliates, it was still a better showing than their triple-A counterparts.
The Braves actually jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. John Estevez and Mario Baez registered one RBI each in the frame, while Junior Garcia scored on a Diego Benitez fielder’s choice.
The FCL Rays tied things up in the bottom of the second before the Braves retook the lead in the top of the third thanks to an RBI-single off the bat of Baez to make it a 4-4 game. However, the pitching staff couldn’t hold onto the lead as the Rays ultimately came out on top by a narrow one-run victory.
(11-19) FCL Braves 4, (18-11) FCL Rays 9 (GAME 2)
- Mario Baez, 2B: 2-2, 2B, R
- Luis Parababire, C-1B: 2-3, 2 R
- Rudit Pena, SP: 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
The outcome for game two for the FCL Braves wasn’t much better, as they were swept after getting beat 9-4 in their final game of the day on Friday.
Rudit Pena got the start in this one and allowed four runs — two earned — while scattering five hits and three walks while striking out a pair.
Meanwhile at the plate, Mario Baez continued his solid day at the plate, going 2-2 with the team’s lone extra-base hit on the day with a double and a run scored. Catcher Luis Parababire also put in a solid day at the dish, going 2-3 with two runs scored in the loss.
(5-4) DSL Braves 3, (5-4) DSL Royals Fortuna 2
- Johan Rodriguez, 1B: 3-3, BB
- Yoelvis Betancourt, C: 1-3, RBI, BB
- Diego Tornes, CF: 1-3, BB
- Raudy Reyes, SP: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 4 BB, 5 K
In what was one of only two wins among Braves minor league teams on Friday, the DSL squad managed to get the victory and put up some interesting performances by some key prospects.
Raudy Reyes got the start for the DSL Braves and was very solid in his outing. In 3.2 innings of work, he allowed just two hits and struck out five batters during that span. The only downside is that he also walked four batters in less than four innings of work. However, control issues are to be expected with a young pitcher with an arm as lively as Reyes has. If he can cut down on the walks — and there’s plenty of time to work on that aspect of his game — the sky is the limit for the 6-foot-4, 16-year-old righty.
At the plate, first baseman Johan Rodriguez put up the best performance for the DSL squad, going 3-3 with a walk to his credit. Catcher Yoelvis Betancourt and center fielder Diego Tornes both went 1-3 on the day, while the former also registered an RBI to his credit.
