Baumann struck out six while only giving up four hits on the night

(40-58) Gwinnett Stripers 0, (50-46) Memphis Redbirds 6

  • Jose Devers, DH: 2-3, 2B
  • Eddys Leonard, 1B: 1-3, 3B
  • Brett Sears, SP: 6 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, BB, 3 K

Box Score

It was an all-around bad day for Gwinnett on Wednesday, as the Stripers were shutout by Memphis on the day. Starter Brett Sears managed to last six innings, but also gave up five runs on six hits in the process as the Redbirds scored at least one run in each of the first four innings to take a 5-0 lead before the fifth inning even started.

Memphis tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh off of Jackson Stephens to make it a 6-0 advantage over the Stripers.

At the plate, things were just as bad for Gwinnett. Jose Devers tallied a double as he went 2-3 and Eddys Leonard also registered a triple on the night, but that was the totality of the offense on the night as the Stripers were held scoreless on the night.

(37-52) Columbus Clingstones 0, (49-39) Chattanooga Lookouts 1

  • Cal Conley, SS: 1-3, 2B
  • Rolddy Munoz, SP: 2.2 IP, 3 H, R, 2 BB, 3 K

Box Score

Much like their triple-A counterparts, Wednesday’s contest for Columbus was rough, to say the least.

The only run of the game came in the top of the first, as Chattanooga tagged Columbus starter Rolddy Munoz for an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead. Munoz ended up giving up three hits and a pair of walks in his outing while striking out three in 2.2 innings. With his performance, Munoz has officialy lowered his season ERA to 1.99.

After Munoz gave way to the bullpen, Brian Moran, Shay Schanaman and Blane Abeyta held things down, tossing a combined 6.1 innings of scoreless ball. Moran was actually spectacular, as he struck out seven batters in his 3.1 innings of work.

Offensively, Cal Conley registered the Clingstones’ only extra-base hit on the night, a double in the bottom of the second inning, as Columbus was shutout in the 1-0 loss.

(39-50) Rome Emperors 6, (53-36) Hudson Valley Renegades 1

  • Justin Janas, 3-4, 3B, RBI, R
  • Alen Pineda, C: 1-4, HR, 3 RBI, R
  • Lizandro Espinoza, SS: 1-4, HR, RBI, R, BB
  • Garrett Baumann, SP: 7 IP, 4 H, 6 K

Box Score

Rome parlayed a stellar start on the mound from Garrett Baumann and several key offensive performances into a 6-1 win over Hudson Valley on Wednesday.

After giving up six runs in five innings in his last start prior to the all-star break, Baumann bounced back in a big way. Across seven innings of work, the 20-year-old scattered just four hits and struck out six while not issuing a single walk on the day. With his performance, Baumann lowered his season ERA back under 4.

At the plate, Baumann got plenty of run support, especially early on. The Emperors struck first in this one as Jake Steels brought Mason Guerra home via sacrifice fly to give Rome a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Two innings later, Justin Janas — who tallied three hits on the night — tripled into center field to plate Will Verdung, extending the lead to 2-0.

The big breakthrough on offense came in the top of the seventh, as Alen Pineda launched a three-run homer over the left field wall to make it a 5-0 game. Lizandro Espinoza tacked on a solo homer in the top of the eighth to give the Rome bullpen some extra breathing room to make it 6-0.

While the Renegades did manage to plate a run in the bottom of the ninth, J.J. Niekro worked around some late trouble to slam the door and seal the Rome win.

(46-44) Augusta GreenJackets 6, (50-41) Hickory Crawdads 0

  • Douglas Glod, DH: 2-4, 2B, R, BB
  • Elio Campos, 2B: 2-3, 2 RBI, BB
  • Eric Hartman, CF: 2-6, RBI
  • Cam Caminiti, SP: 4 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K

Box Score

Cam Caminiti put up yet another solid start at the low-A level, helping lead Augusta to a win over Hickory.

While he only managed to go four innings, Caminiti kept the Crawdads at bay by limiting them to just two hits and a pair of walks while striking out five in his outing. Caminiti also managed to get 12 whiffs on the night as well — tossing 66 total pitches, 46 of which were for strikes.

In 26.1 innings pitched thus far at the low-A level, Caminiti has been brilliant, as the young lefty has totaled 36 strikeouts. He has also posted a stellar 2.73 ERA. The Braves haven’t been shy about pushing their top guys and challenging them, so if he can string together a few additional similar starts, there’s reason to believe Caminiti could find his way to Rome before the season’s end.

Back to Wednesday’s action, the Augusta offense took a few innings to get going, but finally clicked in the top of the fourth. Luis Guanipa led off the frame with a walk before Juan Mateo doubled him to third. Colby Jones plated Guanipa on a single and Mateo later came around to score on a Colin Burgess on a groundout. Later in the inning, Elio Campos scored Jones on a sacrifice fly and Eric Hartman scored Douglas Glod on an RBI-single into center field to make it a 4-0 game.

In the top of the fifth, Guanipa scored on an RBI-single off the bat of Elio Campos to extend the lead to 5-0. To wrap up the scoring output, the GreenJackets managed to load the bases in the top of the seventh before Joe Olsavsky worked a five-pitch, bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 6-0.

After Caminiti gave way to the bullpen, David Rodriguez came on and tossed five scoreless innings of his own to keep Hickory off the scoreboard as Augusta got the shutout win.
