Lucas Braun with another big whiff (18) game
(62-40) Durham Bulls @ (42-62) Gwinnett Stripers – POSTPONED
(38-50) Columbus Clingstones 0, (52-47) Montgomery Biscuits 5
- Geraldo Quintero, LF: 1-for-3, BB, .231/.345/.409
- David McCabe, 3B: 1-for-4, .288/.375/.400
- Lucas Braun, SP: 5.1IP 5H 5R 4ER 1BB 5K, 4.28 ERA
This one….was rough. The Clingstones ran into the buzz saw that is Yoniel Curet and were completely dominated. Curiel, the Rays #15 prospect prospect according to MLB Pipeline, obliterated the Clingstones with his dominating three pitch mix. The Clingstones had just one hit against him (Quintero), and were hit by two pitches (Workinger, Kilpatrick Jr.) but were otherwise silenced. Curet features a double plus fastball, plus cutter, and fringe average changeup and has been in fantastic form, so the expectations were a bit low coming into this game – but Curet put on a show. Antonio Menendez, and JJ Goss would pitch the final four innings and also blank the Clingstones offense en route to a dominating 5-0 win.
It’s unfortunate because Lucas Braun pitched a lot better than his line. A throwing error by catcher Adam Zebrowski resulted in the first run of the game being scored against Lucas in the first. Lucas would then shut down the Biscuits really until the sixth innings when a pair of singles and a wild pitch would add a second run. Then Adam Zebrowski would commit his second throwing error of the game setting up runner on third with zero outs. He would be removed from the game with runners on second and third and one out when reliever Zach Thompson would give up a sacrifice fly and run scoring single to push the lead to 5-0. Braun finished the game with 18 whiffs.
(69-28) Greensboro Grasshoppers @ (39-56) Rome Emperors – POSTPONED
(56-39) Carolina Mudcats 0, (50-47). Augusta GreenJackets 3
- Eric Hartman, CF: 1-for-4, R, SB (33), .234/.346/.376
- Owen Carey, RF: 1-for-4, R, .252/.331/.333
- Juan Mateo, 3B: 3-for-4, 2 RBI, R, .262/.340/.286
- Nick Montgomery, C: 2-for-4, RBI, .187/.278/.289
- Kendy Richard, SP: 3.2IP 2H 0R 5BB 9K, 0.00 ERA
Another solid win for the GreenJackets against a really good Mudcats team. The GreenJackets staff of Kendy Richard , Samuel Mejia (3.1IP 1H 0R 1BB 4K), and Trent Buchanan (2IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K) shut down the best offense in the league. Kendy Richard made his stateside debut after a fantastic season with the FCL Braves, and looked really solid. He has a three pitch mix with a low-90s fastball, a slider he can work to both sides of the plate, and decent changeup that looks to be useful against left handed hitters. His command betrayed in the fourth as he did manage to load the bases with two outs, but Samuel Mejia came right in and shut the door.
That was a big moment because it preserved a 1-0 lead that the GreenJackets picked up in the previous inning when Juan Mateo singled in Eric Hartman who had stolen third earlier that inning for his 33rd stolen base of the season. Mateo would come through again with another RBI single in the sixth after Owen Carey singled to start the inning and then took second on a balk. They would then add on their final run of the game in the 8th inning when, who else but Juan Mateo, singled with one out for his third hit of the game. He would eventually come around the score on a Nick Montgomery single.
Strong pitching, good speed, and timely hitting. A theme beginning to develop over in Augusta.
(21-19) DSL Red Sox Red 8, (18-22) DSL Braves 9
- Angel Carmona, SS: 2-for-4, 2 2B, RBI, R, BB, .179/.258/.429
- Manuel Campos, DH: 2-for-3, 2B, R, 3 RBI, .252/.363/.315
- Juan Espinal, CF: 0-for-2, SF, 2 BB, R, .228/.423/.416
- Gensi Angeles, SP: 4IP 5H 6R 3ER 2BB 3K, 3.12 ERA
It was bound to eventually happen but Gensi Angeles finally faced some adversity in what appears to be a very entertaining win by the DSL Braves. Angel Carmona picked up a pair of doubles and pushed his OPS up to .687 despite a .258 OPS. Juan Espinal picked up his second walk of the game in the ninth inning that resulted in the game winning run. He would walk to start the 9th, steal second, take third on a wild pitch, and score on another wild pitch.
