Thursday was a day of firsts for some young international signees. Jose Perdomo had his first career homer. Raudy Reyes made his first career appearance. Diego Tornes had his first career hit.

(24-36) Gwinnett Stripers 4, (35-24) Nashville Sounds 3

  • Jarred Kelenic, CF: 0-for-4, .221/.312/.320
  • Carlos Rodríguez, LF: 2-for-4, 2R, .304/.358/.342
  • James McCann, C: 1-for-3, 3R HR, BB, .295/.333/.508
  • Ian Anderson, SP: 5IP 5H 3ER 4BB 1K, 4.50 ERA
  • Jesse Chavez, RP: 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K, 1.77 ERA

Box Score

The Stripers overcame a roughish start by Ian Anderson to capture a really good win. The good for Ian – gave up only three earned runs over five innings. The bad? He gave up five hits and walked four. He came into the game with a strikeout rate of 7.71 per 9, but with a walk rate of 6.75 per 9 and as you can see above, that did not improve. He also had just three whiffs with two coming on his fastball and one on his changeup. He started the game with a single, two walks, and a wild pitch all before registering his first out. A pair of sacrifice flies and the Stripers found themselves down 2-0. The Sounds would add a run in the third to push their lead to 3-0 but then James McCann took things into his own hands.

McCann has been fantastic at the plate while in the organization and is now slugging .508 on the season. With Ian out of the game and the scored tied at 3-3, the Stripers bullpen took over to great effect. Austin Cox (1IP 1H 0R 0BB 0K), Michael Peterson (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K), Jesse Chavez (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K) dominated the Sounds offense over the next three innings setting the stage for the Stripers and this RBI single for Matthew Batten

Wander Suero would give up just one single to close out the game and give the Stripers the come from behind victory.

(23-27) Columbus Clingstones 4, (26-28) Pensacola Blue Wahoos 7

  • David McCabe, 1B: 1-for-4, R, RBI, .237/.374/.355
  • Drew Compton, D: 1-for-4, 2B, .270/.347/.362
  • Geraldo Quintero, LF: 1-for-4, 3B, .218/.319/.468
  • Lucas Braun, SP: 5IP 4H 6R 5ER 3BB 5K, 4.50 ERA
  • Elison Joseph, RP: 1.1IP 1H 0R 2BB 3K, 3.18 ERA

Box Score

Lucas Braun didn’t have his best command in this start, battling his way through five innings, allowing four hits and three walks with six runs (five earned) as he struck out five. Braun held Pensacola off the board for the first pair of innings, before giving up two in the third, three in the fourth, and a final run in the fifth. Amos Willingham allowed a run to score in his inning and two thirds, before Elison Joseph picked up the last four outs with three strikeouts.

The Clingstones scored four runs, but no one in the lineup really stood out from the pack. As a team they recorded five hits, two walks, and just two extra-base hits. In fact only Kobe Kato, who drew two walks, reached base twice. Geraldo Quintero tripled and scored a run, while Drew Compton doubled and batted one in, making them the biggest keys to the offense. David McCabe went one for four with a run scored and a run batted in during the loss.

(27-27) Rome Emperors 2, (27-27) Greenville Drive 7

  • Logan Samuels, SP: 4.1IP 6H 6ER 2BB 0K, 6.06 ERA
  • E.J. Exposito, 3B: 1-for-4, .246/.354/.434
  • Patrick Clohisy, LF: 1-for-5, .245/.345/.338
  • Jacob Gomez, RP: 2IP 1H 0R 1BB 3K, 0.00 ERA

Box Score

Rough one for the Rome Emperors as they committed nearly as many errors (3) as they had hits (4). They managed to score two runs because the Drive committed three errors in a single inning. They went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring positioned and stranded nine on base.

Pitching wise, Logan Samuels got the start and got roughed up as he gave up two homers and a double. The six runs were the most he’s given up in a game this season, with the previous high being three back on May 16th. The undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion has put together a very quality start to the season. Jacob appeared in 7 games last season and had a 0.66 ERA along with a 14.49 K/9. He followed that up with an impressive first 13 games for the GreenJackets this season with a 2.95 ERA which led to his promotion to Rome. Jacob is low 90s with his fastball and pairs it with with a low 80s slider.

(30-24) Fayetteville Woodpeckers 7, (28-24) Augusta GreenJackets 3

  • Colby Jones, SS: 2-for-4, .229/.343/.295
  • Isaiah Drake, CF: 1-for-5, 2 RBI, .278/.363/.409
  • Owen Carey, DH: 0-for-5, .279/.354/.389
  • Nick Montgomery, C: 0-for-4, .168/.261/.259
  • Owen Hackman, SP: 4IP 6H 3ER 1BB 5K, 5.28 ERA

Box Score

Rough loss in a very close game for the GreenJackets who unfortunately came apart in the 9th inning. Owen Hackman picked up the start for the GreenJackets and did a good job working around traffic and limiting it to just three runs despite not having the best stuff. Since he got roughed up for six back in his first start in May, Hackman has pitched pretty well for Augusta. He would leave the game down 3-0 but the GreenJackets would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Isaiah Drake hit this two run single.

They would then tie the game in the following inning when Leiker Figueroa hit a two out hit to tie the game at 3-3.

The two teams would trade zeros for the next two innings before disaster would strike for the GreenJackets pitching staff. Adam Shoemaker had an inning to forget. He would strike out the lead of hitter, give up a single, and then strike out Justin Trimble to have two outs in the 9th. Then this happened: BB, BB, HBP, BB, Pitching Change, BB, BB, K. With the game now 7-3 the GreenJackets would threaten, with two on and two outs, but Mason Guerra would strike out to end the game.

(8-15) FCL Braves 5, (14-9) FCL Twins 8

  • Jose Perdomo, SS: 1-for-4, HR, RBI, R, .247/.305/.329
  • Junior Garcia, LF: 1-for-4, 2R, RBI, .234/.300/.406
  • Manuel Dos Passos, C: 2-for-3, BB, R, .306/.405/.500
  • Carlos Monteverde, 1B: 1-for-2, RBI, BB, .297/.381/.405
  • Cayman Goode, SP: 0.2IP 2H 3ER 2BB K, 4.00 ERA

Box Score

Cayman Goode had his first real rough start for the FCL Braves – lasting 0.2 innings and giving up three earned runs. The raw but high ceiling prospect has been solid in his professional debut this year has he has now appeared in five games and has a 4.00 ERA. Jose Perdomo hit his first professional homer, while Manuel Dos Passos continued his good work in Florida. Carlos Monteverde has been swinging a hot since being sent back to Florida as well – a very encouraging sign.

(0-3) DSL LAD Bautista 9, (1-2) DSL Braves 11

  • Diego Tornes, CF: 1-for-4, 2R, BB, .091/.333/.091
  • Juan Espinal, RF: 0-for-4, R, .091/.286/.182
  • Michael Martinez, DH: 3-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB, .429/.556/.714
  • Gabriel Cesa, LF: 3-for-5, 2 RBI, .600/.600/.600
  • Raudy Reyes, SP: 2.2IP 0H 1ER 4BB 3K, 3.38 ERA

Box Score

The DSL Braves offense erupted for 11 runs in a win over the Dodgers. 16 year old phenom Raudy Reyes made his professional debut and pitched 2.2 innings while giving up one earned run and striking out three while walking four. The big bonus signings in Diego Tornes and Juan Espinal went a combined 1-for-8, with Diego picking up the first hit of his professional career. The bottom 3 of the lineup (Malvin Fernandez, Gabriel Cesa, Juan Elejandro) went 7-for-12 with 5 RBI.
