Congrats as Mississippi as they beat Montgomery for the Double-A South title on Sunday.

The Mississippi Braves took home the Double-A South Championship thanks to a fine pitching performance and a homer by Greyson Jenista. Drew Waters homered for Gwinnett in a losing effort.

Durham Bulls 4, Gwinnett Stripers 3

Box Score

  • Drew Waters, CF: 1-4, R, 2 RBI, HR, .245/.333/.392
  • Phil Ervin, RF: 1-3, R, RBI, HR, .194/.300/.338
  • Connor Johnstone, SP: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K, 4.98 ERA
  • Touki Toussaint, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 4.08 ERA

Sunday saw a mostly strong pitching performance from the Gwinnett staff, with one exception. Connor Johnstone got the start and allowed a run over three innings, followed by Jasseel De La Cruz who gave up three runs while retiring just two batters. Touki Toussaint tossed a scoreless inning of relief as the Gwinnett bullpen held Durham in check the rest of the way.

The Gwinnett offense didn’t do much on Sunday outside of homers by Drew Waters and Phil Ervin that accounted for all three of their runs scored. Terrance Gore had a 2-for-3 game, which, along with the pair of homers, accounted for four of the five Gwinnett hits.

Mississippi Braves 2, Montgomery Biscuits 1

Box Score

  • Greyson Jenista, RF: 1-3, R, RBI, HR
  • CJ Alexander, 3B: 2-3, RBI, 2B
  • Alan Rangel, SP: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
  • Brandon White, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

With a 2-1 win over Montgomery on Sunday, the Mississippi Braves won the Double-A South Championship after winning three games in a best of five series. Congratulations to the players and coaches with the Mississippi team who put together a championship team in this very weird year that followed essentially a year and a half off.

In the deciding Game 5, the Braves turned the ball over to Alan Rangel and got a great effort from the minor league veteran. Rangel went six innings allowing just an unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out eight. Brandon White, Jake Higginbotham, and Nolan Kingham each tossed a scoreless inning out of the pen in order to keep Montgomery at bay and close out the championship. The three relievers allowed just one base runner, a hit allowed by Kingham in the top of the ninth, striking out four.

Offensively the Braves scored once in the top of the second, only to be matched by Montgomery in the bottom of the inning. Then in the fifth inning a solo homer from Greyson Jenista gave them the run that turned out to be the winning run in a 2-1 game. Jenista ended the series going just 3-for-18, but each of his three hits were homers. CJ Alexander finished up a strong series with a 2-for-3 game and drove in Mississippi’s other run. That was all for the Mississippi offense on Sunday as outside of Alexander and Jenista, a Trey Harris single was the only other hit off Montgomery pitching.
