Nick Montgomery had a big day for Augusta, reaching base three times – including a game-winning triple.
The biggest headline in the Atlanta Braves system on Sunday saw Nick Montgomery put up one of his best games of the year, reaching base three times and recording a triple that ended up giving Augusta a win in the 11th inning. Hurston Waldrep and Brett Sears also made solid starts on Sunday, though both of their final lines look a little less pretty after some runs scored in their final innings of work.
Gwinnett Stripers 6, Norfolk Tides 4
- Jarred Kelenic, CF: 3-5, 3 R, .218/.300/.315
- Carlos Rodriguez, DH: 2-3, 2B, BB, 2 R, .293/.358/.345
- Hurston Waldrep, SP: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 5.64 ERA
The final line doesn’t show you just how well Hurston Waldrep fared against a very strong Norfolk lineup. Waldrep finished by allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over six innings, however three of those runs came in his sixth and final inning. Through five Waldrep allowed just one run on four hits and a walk, but he allowed a walk and a pair of homers in that final inning to change his final line. After Waldrep came a scoreless inning apiece from Daysbel Hernandez, Jesse Chavez, and Wander Suero, with Suero picking up the save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.
This was the rare quiet day for Jurickson Profar on his rehab assignment, going hitless in five at bats. However the rest of the top of the lineup picked up the slack, as Jarred Kelenic went three for five and scored three runs and Carlos Rodriguez also reached base three times with two runs. Rodriguez singled, doubled, and drew a walk. Cleanup hitter Eddys Leonard went two for four and picked up a pair of runs batted in, while Conner Capel added a solo homer in the win.

Biloxi Shuckers 4, Columbus Clingstones 1
- Geraldo Quintero, 2B: 1-4, SB, .228/.324/.439
- David McCabe, 3B: 1-3, HR, BB, R, RBI, .247/.353/.372
- Brett Sears, SP: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 4.06 ERA
Similar to Waldrep above, the final line doesn’t tell the whole story for how well Brett Sears pitched on Sunday. Sears final line saw him allow two runs on four hits and two walks over four and two thirds, striking out four. However through four shutout innings he allowed just two hits and two walks. He allowed a homer in the fifth, then a couple batters later gave up a single that came around to score after he checked out of the game. Tyler LaPorte came in next and struggled with his command, giving up a run on three walks and a hit over his third of an inning. Brian Moran was next and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts over a pair of scoreless innings, followed by one from Jose Cuas. The final inning came from Blane Abeyta, who allowed an unearned run in the ninth.
The Clingstones offense struggled here, outside of a David McCabe homer. McCabe also added a walk to reach base twice. He was joined by Cody Milligan, who walked twice, as the only Stones to reach base multiple times. Singles by Geraldo Quintero, Stephen Paolini, Cal Conley, and Chandler Seagle accounted for the rest of the team’s five hits in the loss.
Swing and Misses

Brian Moran – 5
Tyler LaPorte – 4

Augusta GreenJackets 7, Fayetteville Woodpeckers 4
- Nick Montgomery, C: 1-3, 3B, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI, .170/.257/.278
- Owen Carey, CF: 0-5, 2 RBI, .265/.336/.358
- Isaiah Drake, LF: 1-5, .251/.337/.352
- Adam Shoemaker, RP: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 5.48 ERA
This was a brutal game on the bullpen, but the GreenJackets pulled it out anyway. Seth Keller got the start and didn’t have his command, lasting just one inning and giving up a pair of runs as he walked four and gave up a hit as well. Adam Shoemaker was next up and he went two scoreless innings, allowing just a pair of walks while striking out three. The next two innings went to Jackson Dannelley, who allowed just a solo homer while striking out three. Justin Long went an inning and two thirds scoreless without allowing a base runner, striking out two, with Juan Sanchez adding two strikeouts in two and a thirds scoreless. This game went into extra innings and Albert Rivas pitched the 10th and 11th, allowing just the inherited runner to score in the 10th. Combined the six pitchers went 11 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and eight walks, striking out 11.
The star at the dish in this one was Nick Montgomery. Montgomery ended up going one for three with a triple, two walks, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. For a guy who has struggled so much this year, in his first full season of professional baseball, a game where he reaches base three times – including what ended up being the game winning triple in the 11th inning, is a good boost to his confidence. The only multi-hit game came from Elio Campos, who was two for four with a walk and a stolen base. Owen Carey went hitless in five at bats, but did pick up a pair of RBI. Isaiah Drake and Douglas Glod each went one for five on the day, while Colby Jones walked once and was hit by pitch twice and stole two more bases to bring his total there up to 44 on the season. Luis Guanipa was hitless in five at bats, but did score a run in the win.
