Braves Minor League Recap: Pitching shines on a rough day on the farm

Hurston Waldrep’s good work of late continued as he gave up just one earned run over six innings

(36-54) Gwinnett Stripers 0, (53-36) Indianapolis Indians 3

  • Hurston Waldrep, SP: 6IP 4H 2R 1ER 2BB 6K, 4.97 ERA
  • Luke Waddell, SS: 1-for-3, BB, .288/.414/.342
  • Carlos Rodríguez, DH: 1-for-3, BB, .282/.353/.349

Box Score

It’s tough to win when you don’t score, and that’s exactly what happened for the Stripers tonight as they were shut down by the Indianapolis Indians – led by Top 100 prospect Bubba Chandler who struck out 7 stripers over 6 innings of work of his own. It’s a shame because while Hurston was in the zone maybe a tad too much over the course of this game, he was still effective – giving up just one earned run over six innings of work himself. Outside of his blow up game against the Sounds on June 8th, Hurston Waldrep has given up more than two earned runs just one time and has shaved more than a full earned run off of his ERA. He was followed up by Rolddy Muñoz who pitched the games final two innings and gave up a n earned run himself.

Unfortunately for the two of them the International League’s second worst offense had just six hits and went just 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left a total of seven on base while striking out 11 times. They threatened in the 1st, 3rd, and 6th innings but would fail to get a runner past second base in what was ultimately another rough loss.

There really isn’t much else to say other than Jarred Kelenic made a nice play.

(43-40) Pensacola Blue Wahoos 1, (34-37) Columbus Clingstones 0

  • Ethan Workinger, RF: 1-for-4, .231/.304/.428
  • David McCabe, DH: 1-for-3, BB, .271/.365/.398
  • Landon Harper, SP: 8IP 4H 0R 0BB 8K, 2.64 ERA

Box Score

Heartbreaking loss for the Clingstones as they lose on a passed ball in the 9th inning of the game. Landon Harper turned in an absolute gem of a game, recording 8 strikeouts over 8 innings of scoreless work. He allowed just four total baserunners, of which just one made it passed second base. Outside of his June 15th start in which Landon surrendered six runs, four earned, he has been an absolute workhorse for the Clingstones as he’s now appeared in 17 games total with seven starts. The 2022 14th round pick has been a revelation for the Clingstones and a huge asset for the Braves as a whole.

Landon unfortunately did not factor into the decision because the Clingstones offense was pretty much non-existent, as they went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, and did not record a single extra-base hit. On the plus side, David McCabe kept up his solid form of late as he got on base twice and has gotten on base in 11 of his last 12 games.

Even more unfortunately, the Clingstones lost the game on a run that scored via a passed ball with two outs. Just overall, a very brutal night for everyone not named Landon Harper.

(42-41) Hub City Spartanburgers 6, (36-46) Rome Emperors 1

  • Mason Guerra, 1B: 1-for-3 2B, R, BB, .208/.255/.375
  • Keshawn Ogans, 3B: 1-for-3, .236/.344/.291
  • Jacob Kroeger, SP: 6IP 6H 2ER 3BB 1K, 2.30 ERA

Box Score

Rome fell (heh heh) in an unfortunate whooping at the hands of the Spartanburgers last night. Rome collected just one run on six hits and went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position. They started the game 1-for-11, and never really found any traction. Their lone run scored came in the 7th inning when Mason Guerra led off the inning with a double. After Justin Janas flied out, Bryson Horne singled in Mason to cut the deficit to 3-1. They would threaten in the final two innings of the game, but ultimately would ground in to two separate double plays to end the game.

It’s a shame because Jacob Kroeger, while not his best outing, turned in yet another solid outing – giving up just a pair of earned runs over six innings of work. On the season Jacob has given up more than two earned runs just one time, in which he gave up three and gave up just one extra-base hit. The 10th round pick from 2024 has turned in a very good season so far, as he’s pitched to the tune of a 2.30 ERA, and 1.05 WHIP.

Rob Griswold (1.1IP 3H 1ER 0BB 0K), Justin Long (1.1IP 2H 3R 2ER 0BB 1K), and Jacob Gomez (0.2IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K) worked the final four innings of the game.

(32-49) Salem Red Sox 0, (42-39) Augusta GreenJackets 2 – F/7

  • Eric Hartman, CF: 1-for-3, R, SB .235/.347/.388
  • John Gil, SS: 1-for-1, BB, .225/.321/.290
  • Isaiah Drake, LF: 2-for-3, 2B, RBI, .254/.341/.349
  • David Rodriguez, SP: 5IP 2H 0R 3BB 2K, 2.60 ERA

Box Score

Augusta won game one of their double header in an old fashioned pitchers duel. Starting pitcher David Rodriguez continued his good work allowing just two hits over five innings of work. That’s now four starts on the season for David and he’s given up a total of one earned run in those starts. David has really turned it on after a rough start to the season where he gave up a total of eight earned runs over his first three games. Since, he’s appeared in 14 games and given up a total of five runs. He was followed by Trent Buchanan who worked a pair of scoreless innings to preserve the shutout for the GreenJackets.

The GreenJackets scored their only two runs of the double header in the first two innings of game 1. Isaiah Drake grounded out with runners on second and third and 1 out to give the GreenJackets a 1-0 lead. They scored their second run in the second thanks to a throwing error by the second baseman to go up 2-0. They would then threaten again in the third inning, loading the bases, but Elio Campos would ground out to end the threat. Over the games remaining innings the GreenJackets would register just a pair of singles.

(33-48) Salem Red Sox 1, (41-40) Augusta GreenJackets 0 – Game 2

  • Eric Hartman, DH: 0-for-4, .235/.347/.388
  • Owen Carey, CF: 1-for-4, 2 SB, .254/.323/.338
  • Luis Guanipa, RF: 2-for-4, .236/.311/.291
  • Owen Hackman, SP: 6.1IP 5H 0R 0BB 7K, 3.98

Box Score

The theme of the night continued in Augusta’s game 2 shutout loss. Owen Hackman was fantastic, giving up five hits (one double) over 6.1 innings of work. Owen wouldn’t allow a runner past first until the third inning when he would balk Andruw Musett over to second. He would then allow a double in the fifth inning, with just one out, but would retire the next two batters via strikeout and ground out. Outside of that it was lights out work by the GreenJackets pitching duo who would only give up a run because of the ghost runner rule in the games last innings (8th) when Juan Sanchez gave up a two out single.

But much like every other team on the farm, it was a wasted start because the GreenJackets offense simply could not get the big hit they needed across any inning. They would go 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and would even get runners on second and third in the bottom of the sixth innings with just one out, but would fail to drive in a single run in the shutout loss. One of the few positives from the game offensively was Luis Guanipa getting on base a pair of times. Luis has now registered a multi-hit game in four of the eight games he’s played in this month which has resulted in his batting average raising from .120 up to .236.

(27-18) FCL Orioles 4, (15-31) FCL Braves 3 – F/8

  • Manuel Dos Passos, C: 1-for-3, 2B, 2 R, BB, .232/.347/.354
  • Jose Perdomo, SS: 2-for-4, 2B, RBI, .200/.249/.257
  • Junior Garcia, RF-CF: 1-for-2, BB, .203/.279/.341
  • J.J. Niekro, SP: 3IP 1H 0R 1BB 4K, 0.00 ERA

Box Score

Jose Perdomo ended his slide with a two hit performance, with a double and RBI, scoring Manuel Dos Passos in this shortened game. Rehabbing pitcher J.J. Niekro fired three more scoreless innings of work and is now up to five scoreless innings during his assignment.

(27-19) FCL Orioles 0, (16-31) FCL Braves 3 – F/7

  • Carlos Monteverde, 1B-RF: 1-for-3, 2B, 3 RBI, .214/.327/.286
  • Mario Baez, 2B: 1-for-2, .200/.390/.238
  • John Estevez, LF: 1-for-2, BB, R, .176/.323/.275
  • Cayman Goode, SP: 5IP 1H 0R 2BB 5K, 3.57 ERA

Box Score

The FCL Braves picked up win #16 thanks to some impressive pitching from Cayman Goode who threw 5 scoreless innings against the Orioles. Whilmer Guerra worked the final two innings to preserve the shutout, striking out two over the games final two innings. Carlos Monteverde went 1-for-3 with a bases clearing double.

(11-16) DSL Braves 7, (14-14) DSL Astros Orange 8 – F/10

  • Manuel Campos, 2B: 3-for-5, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 SB, .242/.356/.323
  • Diego Tornes, CF: 0-for-3, 3 BB, SB, .275/.368/.382
  • Juan Espinal, DH: 1-for-2, R, RBI, 3 BB, .250/.446/.441
  • Elias Reyno, LF: 2-for-3, 2B, RBI, .194/.325/.269
  • Marcos Pol, SP: 2 IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 2K, 0.00 ERA

Box Score

The DSL Braves lost a heartbreaker, scoring six runs in the 8th and 9th inning to tie the game before a walk off loss. Juan Espinal continued his impressive plate discipline – walking three times and upping his OBP all the way to .446. Diego Tornes, on a bit of a cold stretch, went hitless but also walked three times and increased his OBP up to .368. Second baseman Manuel Campos broke up with a three hit, two stolen base game.
