Braves News: Atlanta Wins Speedway Classic, Austin Riley, Hurtson Waldrep, more

Sunday actually can be a fun day.

When things have happened unexpectedly for the Atlanta Braves over the past 12-15 months, it rarely ends well. Sunday was supposed to be an off day, but Mother Nature decided differently when it came to the 2025 Speedway Classic. And for the Braves, 10 straight Sunday losses was not a streak they were looking to continue.

Fortunately, Eli White and Hurston Waldrep took matters into their own hands. White hit two home runs while Waldrep looked very good in his first MLB appearance of the year as the Braves won 4-2. The Speedway Classic itself will likely be looked upon with mixed reviews, but the players seemed to enjoy it. And furthermore, it just looked like it was a good day for the Braves. And more of those are certainly welcome in 2025.

Braves News

Of course, despite success on the field, a day cannot go by without some concern. Austin Riley was removed from the game with abdominal discomfort, the same injury he had recently been on the IL for.

Michael Harris II is the Battery Power Player of the Month.

Waldrep was returned to AAA after the game as he was the extra player for the Speedway Classic. The Braves will likely need an extra arm for this upcoming weekend, and Waldrep could be in line to make another MLB appearance then.

Mark Bowman looks at the experiences of White, Waldrep and others during the Speedway Classic.

MLB News

The Marlins swept the Yankees over the weekend to surge back to .500.

Jhoan Duran has been quite impressive in his first appearances with the Phillies.

Rookie sensation Jason Misiorowski of the Brewers was placed on the IL.
