Braves News: Austin Riley Goes Deep Again, Hurston Waldrep Sent to Minors, More

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays at Atlanta Braves
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

It was a day of emotions for Austin Riley and many more.

Despite a disappointing 8-6 loss to the Rays on Sunday, the Braves have to be highly encouraged by the return of their expected offensive productivity over the weekend.

This is especially true in the case of Austin Riley.

Riley was able to literally double his season home run total over the weekend, as with a long ball in three straight games, Riley went from three home runs to six home runs on the season in less than 72 hours.

Along with Riley, the Braves lineup as a whole, including an incredible series from Jarred Kelenic out of the leadoff spot, seemed to recover some needed life. Hopefully, this can be the usual June jump-start this lineup experiences, and better days are ahead.

Braves News

The Braves made some roster moves on Sunday, as Grant Holmes was called up and made his major league debut on Sunday. Ray Kerr was sent to Gwinnett in a corresponding move.

Atlanta also optioned Hurston Waldrep back to Gwinnett. Despite showing plenty of flashes of his immense talent, it is also clear Waldrep can benefit from gaining more experience in the minors.

It was an emotional Sunday for many, including Austin Riley. Riley’s mentor, Mike Brumley, tragically passed away over the weekend. Brumley was a former Braves hitting instructor as well, having worked with several past and present Braves.

Nacho Alvarez continued to have an impressive start to his recent AAA promotion over the weekend.

Justin Toscano of the AJC wrapped up the weekend takeaways for the Braves, Riley, and Waldrep.

David O’Brien looked at how the Braves may address the rotation as Waldrep returns to the minors.

The Braves will hope the offense will continue to roll into the start of the week, but may find that a bit difficult against the Tigers pitching staff.

MLB News

Mookie Betts suffered a fractured hand on Sunday, and is the latest injury to a highly significant member of the Dodgers. Yoshinobu Yamamoto was also placed on the injured list of an early exit from his start on Saturday.

The Orioles and Mets helped the Braves in the standings over the weekend, as Baltimore earned wins in two of three games against the Phillies while the Mets swept the Padres.

Seattle made a big statement in their pursuit of an NL West Crown with a weekend sweep of the Rangers.

Jasson Dominguez of the Yankees was placed on the minor league injured list as he deals with an injury to his side.

Phillies star Trea Turner will return to action from the injured list on Monday. Turner has not played since the start of May due to a hamstring injury.

The Giants placed starter Kyle Harrison on the injured list with a sprained ankle.
