Left-hander Dylan Dodd will head back to Gwinnett in the corresponding move. Dodd, who is now working as a reliever, has been effected in the last month for the Stripers and in his limited action with Atlanta. He struck out one batter in 1.2 innings of scoreless reliever. He has appeared in two games for the Braves.
Elder returns to the Braves’ big league rotation as a replacement for injured starter AJ Smith-Shawver who will miss the rest of this season due to an elbow injury. Elder had been pitching will before being squeezed off the roster when pitcher Spencer Strider returned in mid-May.
In his three May starts, Elder tossed 17 innings allowing only six earned runs and striking out 17 batters. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in his last five starts. He worked six innings in four of his last five appearances.
For the season, Elder has struck out only 18.2-percent of the batters he has faced but does have a 3.82 xFIP. After his rocky first three starts with Atlanta, Elder pitched well enough to hold on to a spot in the team’s starting rotation. He will likely get the chance to do so, performance allowing, through the Summer.
