Braves Rumored to Trade Raisel Iglesias, Cubs Interested

July 30, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Chicago Cubs may be looking to strengthen their bullpen for their playoff push. Rumors suggest the Cubs are eyeing veteran closer Raisel Iglesias from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for two prospects, right-handed pitcher Ryan Gallagher and shortstop Angel Cepeda. The potential trade, which was reported on Tuesday by Mark Morales-Smith of Sports Illustrated, would address one of the few remaining weaknesses on a Cubs team hoping for a deep postseason run.

Raisel Iglesias’ skill set & 2025 season

Iglesias has a decade of Major League experience and a proven ability to deliver in high-leverage situations. Although the 35-year-old struggled early this season, he has since bounced back. Since June 9, the righty has held opponents scoreless in 17 of his 19 outings, regaining the command and composure that have made him a trusted closer.

Over 44 appearances this season, Iglesias has 12 saves but carries a 4.97 ERA. Despite the inflated number, his recent dominance has highlighted his value.

What the Braves & Cubs would gain from the trade

The Cubs sit at 62-44 and hold the second-best win percentage in the National League, just one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. This move would highlight a commitment to capitalizing on the team’s championship window. Iglesias could slide into the late-inning mix and offer a reliable option.

Chicago would secure the deal without parting with any of its top seven prospects, although Gallagher and Cepeda are both in the organization’s top 20. Gallagher, a right-handed pitcher, has impressed with his fastball-slider combo, and Cepeda has shown promise as an infielder with solid on-base skills.

The Braves are in the midst of a disappointing season at 45-60 and sit 16 games back in the NL East. They are likely already looking ahead to next season. The team has dropped seven of its last ten games and sits well outside of the playoff picture. With little to gain by holding onto Iglesias, Atlanta could cash in on the closer’s value and add to its farm system.

Iglesias began his MLB career in 2015 with the Cincinnati Reds and has since played for the Los Angeles Angels and the Braves. Atlanta acquired him in August 2022, but with the squad’s season now all but over, his departure would mark a step in the organization’s transition toward youth and long-term planning.

For the Cubs, the acquisition could be pivotal, solidifying their bullpen with a veteran arm just ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
