The Braves go shortstop again, this time dipping into the college ranks

With the 60th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, the Atlanta Braves selected shortstop Alex Lodise from Florida State. Lodise gives the Braves another shortstop to develop, and one with significant power potential.

Introducing Alex Lodise

Alex Lodise isn’t the guy with the loudest tools, but he is a solid all around player with a history of production at a high level of competition. He brings above average power with a fringy hit tool that with work could make him a solid hitting shortstop. Defensively he’s a solid runner and defender with a big arm that won’t stand out at short but can play the position effectively. He’s likely going to be a quicker moving player with a high floor as a utility guy and will have a chance to be a productive regular, even if he doesn’t have the highest upside.

First Reaction

The Atlanta Braves have irked fans by not taking any position players, and now they’ve double dipped the shortstop position. Alex Lodise is a classic fit for the Braves, a player with some serious power potential from a premium defensive position who has enough overall athleticism to develop into the position. Lodise’s question mark around his approach gives him a real question mark and may slow him down from being a relatively immediate impact player, but the Braves as an organization have developed a high level of confidence in developing hitters and especially their plate discipline. Lodise could be targeted to take over the starting shortstop position in a couple of years as long as he can hit enough to stick.
