Oops All Shortstops

With the 96th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, the Atlanta Braves selected shortstop Cody Miller from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. The Braves, known for taking pitchers early, have now taken three shortstops on the first day of the draft

Introducing Cody Miller

Cody Miller might seem like he came out of no where to be the Braves pick, but he put up a .331/.430/.623 season with 18 homers and 27 steals for East Tennessee State. Went to the Cape and has produced a .783 OPS with 3 homers in just 20 games. He’s got some solid power and speed. The hit tool can use some work, especially what he did against better competition in the Cape with his 17 strikeouts in 79 plate appearances being a jump in strikeouts, and against just 5 walks. Defensively he has played short for ETSU, but has a history of playing all over the place and brings versatility. He’s a guy who has shown he can make adjustments so far in his career, and while he comes in as a bit off the radar this high, does have some valuable skills.

First Reaction

There’s not much left to complain about if you were looking for the Braves to draft position players. They cleaned their entire board off with shortstops, and went with a player who had a breakout season in 2025. With athletic options now at the position the Braves have really helped shore up the concerns about their shortstop depth and given themselves plenty of developmental lottery tickets. In addition, Atlanta should have plenty of money to spend on day two, giving them the option to repeat past years and go well over slot on a few players.
