Atlanta also sent out two relievers and designated another for assignment.
The Atlanta Braves have made several changes to the team’s pitching staff heading into today’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. With only one game remaining before the All-Star break, Atlanta is adding two fresh arms as they go for the series sweep.
Coming back to the 26-man roster is Davis Daniel, who appeared with Atlanta for one game earlier this season but has made 14 starts at Triple-A. Also joining Atlanta is reliever Wander Suero, who had been closer for the Gwinnett Stripers. Both right-handed pitchers have prior major league experience – Suero going back to 2018 when he was a staple in the Washington Nationals bullpen for four years.
To make room on the 26-man roster, Atlanta send relievers Austin Cox and Daysbel Hernandez to Triple-A. Needing a 40-man roster spot for Suero, the team designated reliever Michael Peterson for assignment.
Cox has pitched well for Atlanta in six games, totaling eight innings while striking out 11 batters. Hernandez, who recently returned from a stent on the 15-day IL, struggled yesterday, walking three. Hernandez has struggled with walks throughout the season.
Peterson has been on-and-off the team’s big league roster this season after joining the team from the Los Angeles Angels. He saw action in four games for Atlanta.
Suero, 33, struck out 49 batters in 36 innings with the Stripers while picking up 11 saves. He has appeared in 191 big-league games.
Daniel, 28, did not rack-up impressive strikeout numbers with only 60 strikeouts in 76.2 innings but gives Atlanta an option as some who can soak-up innings after yesterday’s bullpen game that saw Joey Wentz make his Braves debut and toss three innings.
