Braves waste terrific pitching performance, lose again because they can’t hit

When will it end?

The Braves pitched well and couldn’t hit anything in yet another loss. This time it came at the hands of the Angels, 4-0.

Grant Holmes was, in a word, spectacular for 6 innings against an Angels lineup that’s been hot lately. He struck out 10 with an astounding 27 swing and misses over 106 pitches. He allowed the Angels to load the bases in the fourth and put runners on the corners in the fifth, but he managed to get out of both jams. It was Holmes’ 10th start in a row allowing three runs or fewer. His ERA is down to 3.47 on the season and is one of the few bright spots for this baseball club.

The only 2 big league pitchers to get 25+ swings and misses in 2 different games this year are Tarik Skubal and Grant Holmes. pic.twitter.com/gLPkedyWmW

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: the Braves were lifeless on offense. Facing veteran lefty Tyler Anderson, Atlanta didn’t do much of anything. They wasted a leadoff triple from Michael Harris in the fifth. They had two in scoring position in the first, but Drake Baldwin struck out to end the threat. Other than that, baserunners were few and far between.

Dylan Lee entered in the eighth and gave up two doubles and a walk to break the scoring ice. Enyel Del Los Santos then came in and gave up a two-run double to Jorge Soler. That was effectively the end of the game.

The series continues on Wednesday with Didier Fuentes set to make his third career start. He’ll be opposed by Yusei Kikuchi, who owns a superb 2.79 ERA. It probably won’t go well. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. ET.
