Smyly was activated from the injured list Saturday morning.
Coming off of a 5-4 win in Friday’s series opener, the Atlanta Braves will try to secure a series win on Saturday when they continue their three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Braves are currently 9-10 on the season and are a game behind the New York Mets in the NL East standings.
As expected, the Braves activated Drew Smyly from the injured list Saturday morning in advance of Saturday’s game. Smyly experienced some forearm discomfort following his last outing on April 11 and Atlanta elected to play it safe by placing him on the injured list. He missed just one turn through the rotation last weekend in Chicago.
Smyly has made two starts this season allowing nine hits and seven earned runs in 11 innings. He has struck out 11 and walked one.
The Diamondbacks will counter with veteran Madison Bumgarner who is coming off of his best start of the season but his overall numbers are still quite ugly. Bumgarner limited the Nationals to two hits and one run over five innings in his last start. Prior to that that he had allowed 22 hits and 17 runs in just 13 2/3 innings. Bumgarner has pitched well in his career against Atlanta posting a 2.73 ERA in 13 career starts.
Ronald Acuña Jr. returned to the lineup for Friday’s series opener after he suffered a lower abdominal strain in a game last Sunday against the Cubs. Cristian Pache remains on the injured list but began playing in games at the alternate training site on Friday. Both Chris Martin and Max Fried have begun throwing but have not yet progressed to throwing off the mound.
First pitch from Truist Park is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports Southeast.
