Fedde will take the mound against the Royals for the first time as a Brave
Coming off a Monday night 10-run win after experiencing a five-game losing streak must feel really nice.
But, you know how the saying “double or nothing” applies? That’s kind of what it feels like in this scenario.
One win is good, but another will be needed for the Atlanta Braves to start making steps out of the hole they dug themselves in.
How will today’s matchup secure that?
Well, as you probably saw in the headlines, there’s a new name listed. On Sunday, the Braves acquired starting right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde from the St. Louis Cardinals, right after he was designated for assignment.
The #Braves today acquired RHP Erick Fedde and cash considerations from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred RHP Grant Holmes to the 60-day injured list.

This was after Grant Holmes was transferred to the 60-day IL list.
Fun fact, if you didn’t recognize it already, Fedde took the mound against the Braves, one game away from the All-Star Break (July 12th), in which the Braves took the 7-6 win.
Ok, let’s start looking at what he’s bringing to the table.
Currently holding a 5.22 ERA and a record of 3-10 across 20 games, it’s not a strong move for the Braves’ pitching rotation by any means.
However, it was necessary to add more depth for a veteran player to enter, pitch deep into innings and hopefully bring in a form of stability as fans wait for the rest of the rotation to heal and return.
Fedde pitched his first career complete game back in May, which resulted in a shutout against the Washington Nationals, who were his very first team.

With a four-pitch arsenal, he relies mostly on his sinker (93.2 mph on average) and his cutter (90.1 mph) as his go-tos for commanding the strike zone.
Although the stats don’t display it, Fedde has what they say is “good stuff,” which produces average results or below on any given day.
For him to secure his first win as a Brave and help the team clinch an early series win, he’ll need to execute early on, and the offense will have to follow, continuing their rally from yesterday.
What about the Kansas City Royals’ side?
Seth Lugo, who reportedly just agreed to a two-year extension with the team, will be taking the mound to face the Braves.
The thirty-five-year-old is posting a 2.95 ERA this season with a WHIP of 1.09.
With an extensive 10-pitch arsenal, the one that the Braves need to be on most alert for is his curveball (77.2 mph).

It’s known to be superior in commanding the strike zone and throwing the hitter off guard.
Although the pitching statistics don’t signify a strong production for tonight’s matchup, it’s still an unknown factor at what Fedde will present for his debut.
This, folks, will hopefully be an entertaining show…let’s see if the Braves will keep up their offense to secure this series with their newcomer on the mound.
That will be a warm welcome indeed.
