Jesse Chavez vs. Tim Hill, or something

So, the Braves and Padres are set to finish out two-and-a-half innings of a seven-inning game from July 21 as the appetizer course to today’s pseudo-doubleheader of baseball action at Petco Park.

Here’s how we got here:

The game started in disastrous fashion at the hands of the no-longer-with-us Bryse Wilson. A leadoff double, a walk, and a single loaded the bases with none out. Eric Hosmer lifted a sac fly for the first run of the game, and then Wilson threw a very wild ball four to Wil Myers to bring in run number two. After a lineout to center that didn’t work as a sac fly, Ha-Seong Kim roped another double, making it 4-0 in San Diego’s favor. Wilson issued an intentional walk to bring up starter Reiss Knehr, and got him on a first-pitch flyout to end that awful frame.

Knehr threw a perfect inning, and the Padres tagged Wilson for run number five after a leadoff walk, a stolen base, and a one-out single. Then, the Braves came roaring back against Knehr. The bottom of the second started with back-to-back walks from Knehr. After a flyout, Guillermo Heredia laced a double to left, scoring one. Orlando Arcia followed with a sac fly. That was it for both Knehr, as he was lifted for Daniel Camarena, as well as Wilson, who gave way to pinch-hitter Ehire Adrianza. The latter doubled for run number three, and leadoff man Joc Pederson singled for run number four. Unfortunately, Dansby Swanson flew out to end the inning.

And that was it for scoring! Josh Tomlin came in and threw a perfect frame; Camarena issued a leadoff walk to Freeman and then departed in favor of Nabil Crismatt, who retired the next three batters. After another perfect Tomlin effort, the Braves got a one-out single from Arcia, chasing Crismatt in favor of Tim Hill, who threw one pitch and got a double-play ball off the bat of pinch-hitter Abraham Almonte. Next up out of Atlanta’s bullpen was Jesse Chavez, who again threw a perfect frame, and that’s where we are.

Joc Pederson will lead off the bottom of the fifth in a seven-inning game against Tim Hill… unless the Padres replace Hill, or the Braves replace Pederson.
