The Braves have built a bit of momentum here now, but losing a series here to the Marlins would be a great way to give it all away.
Grant Holmes will hope to give them a strong start against a weak lineup to help facilitate tying up the series and avoiding a crushing blow just when it was starting to look like the club might have turned the corner…for the second time this season. Grant has been legitimately great the first time through the order this season, but has struggled with walks and homers the second and third times through. Fortunately, the Marlins are quite lacking in the offensive talent department, so perhaps he will suffer less of a TTO penalty.
On the mound for the Marlins is Eury Perez, the one-time star prospect. Perez will be making his third start returning from an injury suffered in 2023, in the midst of an impressive rookie season for the 6’8 Marlins’ righty. He hasn’t had very good results so far in his 7.0 innings back this season, both striking out and walking 6.43 batters per nine innings, which is quite bad on both counts. That said, his fastball is still an electric upper-90s offering with good movement and average extension. None of his other pitches stand out on their movement or velocity, but that fastball is a special offering.
Hopefully the Braves can take advantage of some rust from the young Perez who is still working his way back and snatch an important win to avoid taking another step back in a season full of backwards steps.
