Jesse Chavez takes the mound in what will be a bullpen game for Atlanta in the penultimate game of the regular season for Atlanta, which happens to be game number 160 due to the “postponed” game against the Rockies that is almost certain to never be played, with Atlanta having the division wrapped up and no potential playoff seeding ramifications. That being said, Chavez has been really good this season, despite conflicted peripheral stats. The most sparkling stats are his 2.27 ERA and 2.06 FIP. His xERA of 3.16 and xFIP of 3.73 are a bit less kind, and reflective of the fact that Chavez has not given up a home run so far this season in his 31.2 innings of work. We could also see another inning of work each from the recently called up Spencer Strider and Dylan Lee, after making their 2021 Braves debuts yesterday. In case you missed it, here is a Spencer Strider prospect introduction.
Meanwhile, the Mets will send Carlos Carrasco to the mound to finish off what has been a rough season for him. Carrasco has only pitched 48.2 innings this season, having dealt with a number of injuries, and even when he was healthy, things did not go well. Carrasco’s stats are somewhat the opposite of Chavez’ in the sense that his ERA and FIP are the ugliest of his numbers, at 5.73 and 4.97, with xERA and xFIP being more friendly, at 4.32 and 4.26. Regardless, Carrasco does not appear to be a particularly formidable opponent for a Braves lineup that should be heavily rotated, as Atlanta prepares for the playoffs.
