Albies is on the injured list after suffering a broken toe when he was hit by a pitch in Monday’s game
Ozzie Albies is the third key player for the Atlanta Braves to be placed on the injured list before the end of April. Albies joins catcher Sean Murphy and starter Spencer Strider. Murphy is recovering from an oblique strain that he suffered in the opening series. Strider underwent an internal brace procedure on his pitching elbow and will miss the remainder of the season.
Albies was hit by a pitch in the toe in Monday’s series opener against the Houston Astros. He stayed in and finished the game, but experienced increased soreness afterward. X-rays showed the fracture and Albies was placed on the injured list prior to Tuesday’s game.
MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that a subsequent MRI exam confirmed that surgery won’t be needed. The initial hope is that Albies might be ready to return for just a couple of weeks.
The Braves placed Albies on the 10-day injured list and purchased David Fletcher’s contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. An MRI exam confirmed surgery won’t be needed. So, the initial hope is Albies might be sidelined for just a couple weeks.
The timing is unfortunate as Albies was off to a good start this season hitting .317/.386/.492 with two homers through his first 70 plate appearances. Albies is currently second on the team with 14 RBIs trailing only Marcell Ozuna.
Luis Guillorme started in place of Albies Tuesday night at second base.
