The Astros jumped all over the Braves in G2, evening the series as they head to Atlanta for the weekend.
The Braves entered play Wednesday with an opportunity to seize control in the World Series, but the Astros had other plans. What was a seemingly advantageous matchup for Atlanta against Houston right-hander Jose Urquidy turned sour early, with the offense missing score opportunities and striking out at an alarming rate. Urquidy only had 7.6 K/9 during the regular season, but managed to strike out seven batters in just five innings. Atlanta will need to rediscover their offensive firepower this weekend as they return home with a suspect pitching situation.
Houston came out hot, scoring five runs in the first two innings against Max Fried. The Braves were left scrambling and their offense simply could not put together enough hits to make it close. Fried settled in nicely, but will need to find his groove earlier in his next start.
The loss of Morton stings for Atlanta. Tucker Davidson replaces the right-hander, giving the Braves another long relief option for the remainder of the series.
The Braves manager speaks on the addition of Davidson, pitching plans for this weekend, and the status of Luke Jackson.
Anderson found some trouble in his first start of the NLCS, but overall his postseason career is already highly decorated. The right-hander will take the ball in G3 for the biggest start of his life with an eye toward putting Atlanta back ahead in the series.
Austin Riley unexpectedly put up MVP-caliber numbers this season and his success has carried over into the postseason. The Mississippi native has lifted the Atlanta offense on multiple occasions and appears poised for continued growth in his young career.
Diminutive second baseman Jose Altuve tied Bernie Williams on the all-time postseason home run list on Wednesday, blasting his 22nd. Altuve now trails only Manny Ramirez, who finished with 29.
