MLB team names are weird. MLB is so old that franchises still retain names based on things like uniform color, hailing from back in the day when it was actually somewhat difficult, or at least distinctive, to create uniforms in a specific color. And yet, even some newer team names are really bad. Personally, I hate team names that are vague concepts at best. “Expos” wasn’t any good, but turning a team into the “Nationals” (what even is that?) in the 21st century was basically a crime. And then you have the Mets, who… what even is a Mets? “Oh, they represent people from a city.” Bad news, bro: pretty much all teams represent the people in a city, they just have a cooler team name to do it with.
Here’s my tier list of MLB team names:
A: Angels, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Marlins, Orioles, Padres, Rangers, Tigers
B: Brewers, Cubs, Dodgers, Mariners, Pirates, Rays
C: Astros, Athletics, Braves, Giants, Guardians, Phillies, Rockies, Royals, Twins, Yankees
F: Mets, Nationals
