A look at May 19 of last year
Just a fun exercise. Looking at May 19 of last year…
- The Mariners were the only team above .500 in the AL West
- The Astros were five games under .500
- The Mets were four games under .500
- The Diamondbacks were three games under .500 and in fourth place in the NL West
- The Phillies had a winning percentage over .700
- The Cubs were four games over .500
You get the idea. I could say “a lot will change in four-plus months,” and that’s true. But also, a lot won’t change. Five of the six division winners from that date last year stuck it out, and if my count is correct, so did nine of the 12 in-line-for-playoffs-as-of-that-date teams. So, there’s some variability, but not a boatload.
The question for you: which team(s) is it gonna be this year? For the sake of completeness, the current division leaders are the Yankees, Tigers, Mariners, Phillies, Cubs, and Dodgers, and the remaining playoff teams would be the Mets, Padres, Giants, Twins, Royals, and Guardians.
