The answer is probably yes
For perhaps obvious reasons, no one really tracks bunts. Oh, sure, they track successful bunts, in the sense that sacrifice bunts are a tracked stat, but bunts for hits, unsuccessful bunts of either sort, and so on? Who knows. We do have Baseball Savant, which has a flag for “is bunt,” but the problem is that in 2021 and earlier, the Braves had pitchers, who bunted all the time, so… yeah, that’s not helpful.
Anyway, via Savant, we know that there were this many plays flagged as bunts for the Braves:
- 2022: 6
- 2023: 7
- 2024: 18
- 2025, so far: 10
So, are the Braves going to hit 19 this year, clearing their 2024 total? Seems almost impossible not to, but we’ll find out.
By the way, the aggregate total from 2022-onward is by far the lowest in the majors, 12 behind the Dodgers. They were dead last in both 2022 and 2023, third-to-last in 2024, and are barely out of the bottom ten this year. So it’s not like this is now a buntapalooza relative to the rest of the league. It still sucks, though, as from what I can tell, their bunts have been the seventh-least-valuable on a per-attempt basis. If you’re gonna bunt, maybe be good at it before bunting?
