The pitching pickins on the farm are pretty slim
In case you haven’t been around this week, AJ Smith-Shawver is out for the year. His immediate replacement appears to be Bryce Elder. Davis Daniel, Hurston Waldrep, Nathan Wiles, and perhaps Blake Burkhalter are the depth in the Atlanta organization. Beyond Elder, it’s a mix of the young that need time to cook, and some experienced ones who are probably cooked. So it’s chunky Woody Harrelson replacement-level Bryce Elder then.
So will the Braves trade for a starter this summer? The last time that I can remember the Braves trading for a starting pitcher at or around the deadline, it was Jake Odorizzi in 2022. He put up a 5.24/5.14/4.82 line over 46.1 innings. Then there was Tommy Milone in 2020. That was definitely an acquisition, watching a 14.90/7.33/5.34 line for 9.2 innings over 3 starts. The Braves may have to do something, though. Atlanta is one heartbeat away from seeing what Hurston Waldrep has been up to or watching the Nathan Wiles Experience.
