Where have you drawn the line?
Chances are, if you’re reading this, another in a seemingly-interminable line of morning daily questions posts, you are a diehard. A fanatic. Braves on the brain, or perhaps Braves are your brain. Maybe you’ve made sacrifices to watch or support them. Probably. But I’m not asking about the fandom equivalent of misery poker here. I’m asking about what you haven’t done — where have you drawn the line?
Me? Those lines are few and far between. I’ve surreptitiously watched games (bless you, MLB.tv, smartphones, and communications infrastructure) at weddings and probably at least one funeral, have rarely even missed an inning because of an overlapping work obligation, and have a specific memory seared in my head of going to meet my then-girlfriend (now wife) in a foreign country after not seeing her for months, while being violently ill on the flight over, and while actually re-uniting with her, using my pre-smartphone Blackberry-esque thing to somehow connect to janky Chilean hostel wifi somewhere to see if the 2008 Braves could eke out a late win against the Reds (they did not, no thanks to Jay Bruce).
As far as lines go, I was sternly instructed that baseball would not get in the way of “our” wedding. So, it didn’t. There was no way to know it at the time, but said wedding and honeymoon happened around the Braves’ highly unfortunate 2014 collapse — the day I traveled was the day the team dipped under .500 (they had collapsed far out of relevance by that point already), and Frank Wren getting axed came during my honeymoon. But really, that’s all I got, at least as far as watching games goes. How about you?
