Grad Transfer Will Provide Some Bench Size
This morning former Georgetown center Ryan Mutombo announced that he is transferring to Georgia Tech for his final season. Yes, he is the son of Dikembe Mutombo. He played for three seasons at Georgetown, but has graduated early and is coming to Tech for his final season of eligibility and grad school.
Mutombo is big. 7’2” though he’s skinnier than his dad. He came into Georgetown as a 4* recruit with big expectations, but it didn’t work out for him with the Hoyas. He played a decent role his freshman season and seemed like he might be primed for a big step up, but it didn’t happen. Over the next two seasons he barely played much at all. I’m not really sure what happened here, but not getting any minutes on some bad Georgetown teams is concerning.
I expected Stoudamire to go after some size. Other than Baye Ndongo this team didn’t have anyone over 6’6” with any college play time. Mutombo is big and has some college experience, so he probably wouldn’t be a complete disaster if he needed to play while the freshmen get used to college or God forbid Ndongo gets hurt. Maybe a change of scenery will be good for Mutombo and help him start to develop. I expect him to start as the third center behind Ndongo and Onwuchekwa. If Stoudamire wants to play Ndongo and Onwuchekwa together than Mutombo could be in line for some reserve minutes.
If Miles Kelly and Baye Ndongo return then this would be the 13th and final scholarship. If that is the case then I’m alright with this. He’s not a game changer, but getting a guy who can put in a few minutes at center if need be and a good practice body isn’t a waste with the final scholarship. He also does have talent and has an outside shot of some new coaching bringing it out of him.
