We’ve discussed over the past few weeks how Georgia Tech has had many accomplished athletes at different positions over the past few decades. One position that Georgia Tech isn’t particularly well known for is the tight end spot. Part of that is probably the fact that running the veer option hasn’t given tight ends much of a chance to succeed at the position. Things have changed and the current offense could allow a Tight End to play a standout role in Georgia Tech’s success this year.
Brett Seither is a liked and respected player, but prior to transferring to Tech last year his stats hadn’t set the world on fire. At his previous school, some po dunk college in Athens… I can’t remember their name, Seither put up a total of 54 yards and 1 TD.

Upon coming to Georgia Tech Seither got a hot start by catching the team’s first touchdown pass of the season against Louisville. After that things cooled down a bit for Seither, but he did play a prominent role in the game against UNC where he caught 2 TDs, including an impressive toe drag in the back of the end zone to put Tech ahead late in the game.
Seither ended the year with a total of 101 yards and 4 TDs on the season. These stats put Seither behind Dylan Leonard in yards at the tight end position, but tied Seither with Malik Rutherford for 2nd most receiving touchdowns on the year. Not bad at all for his first year at the program.

Other than the stats, what we saw from Seither in his first year with the team was a receiving tight end who was excellent at running routes and sneaking behind coverage while the defense was distracted by our talented receivers. When given the opportunity Seither has shown great physicality and not an insignificant amount of acrobatics when making tough catches. It’s hard to project given the sheer amount of receiving talent on our team this year, but I expect Buster Faulkner to make more use of Seither as receiver. Tight Ends often get forgotten on offense, but it would be a mistake to forget Seither this year as he is poised for a breakout year.
