Men’s tennis notches dominant home victories

January 27, 2024 by The Technique

The Jackets’ men’s tennis team showcased its prowess on the courts of the Ken Byers Tennis Complex, cruising to dominating victories over Presbyterian College on Jan. 19 and Samford and Wofford on Jan. 21.  The Jackets’ performance was a masterclass in both singles and doubles play, underscoring their depth and skill as they continue their unbeaten run this season.

The Jackets set the tone early with a commanding performance against Presbyterian College on Friday. They swept the doubles point with impressive victories from all three pairs. The duos of junior Gabriele Brancatelli/freshman Richard Biagiotti and senior Andres Martin/freshman Krish Arora dominated their opponents with identical 6-1 scores, while senior Marcus McDaniel/senior Keshav Chopra secured a 6-2 win.

In singles play, Tech continued its dominance. Martin led the charge, clinching the first singles point in a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory. This win set the stage for a series of straight-set triumphs.

Brancatelli and Chopra followed suit, winning their matches on courts three and two respectively. Sophomore Elias Shokry’s victory on court six sealed a resounding 5-0 lead for the Jackets. The final results reflected Tech’s sheer dominance, as each player displayed skill and determination in securing their wins.

The Jackets returned to action on Sunday for a doubleheader, facing off against Samford and Wofford. They replicated Friday’s success with two more 7-0 victories.

Against Samford, the team once again laid a strong foundation in doubles play. McDaniel/Chopra and Martin/Arora breezed through their matches with 6-1 wins, while Brancatelli/Biagiotti notched a 6-3 victory. McDaniel overpowered his opponent in singles play, which was followed by consecutive wins from Shokry, Brancatelli, Chopra and Martin. Arora’s match featured a thrilling first-set tiebreak, which he won 8-6, followed by a solid 6-2 win in the second set.

The match against Wofford mirrored this dominance. Martin and freshman Owen DeMuth led in doubles with a 6-1 victory, while McDaniel and Chopra clinched their match 6-4. In singles, each Tech player contributed to a comprehensive victory.

Sophomore Robert Bauer made a notable return to the court, earning a hard-fought 7-5, 6-2 victory over senior Alex Horn of Wofford. The singles lineup was relentless, with Martin, Chopra, Biagiotti, Arora and junior Rohan Sachdev all registering wins, underscoring the of the Tech squad.

After a weekend of dominant performances, Tech’s men’s tennis team is poised for their next challenge. The team will travel to Pepperdine for a match on Sunday, Jan. 28th at 12 p.m. This upcoming encounter will test the Jackets’ mettle as they aim to continue their impressive run of form.

The standout performances were numerous, but certain players deserve special mention. Martin’s consistent excellence in both singles and doubles was a key factor in the team’s success. Chopra and McDaniel’s formidable partnership in doubles proved equally crucial. Brancatelli validated his #27 ranking with convincing wins in both of his matches.

The key takeaway from these matches is the team’s balance. The ability to dominate both in doubles and singles is a testament to the training and strategic acumen of the coaching staff. The Jackets’ depth is a significant asset. With players like McDaniel, Chopra and Brancatelli leading the way and promising talents like Arora and Shokry making their mark, the team looks well-equipped to face the challenge of maintaining their stellar form in their games.

As they gear up for their first road trip of the year, the Jackets will look to build on their early-season success. Their trip to Pepperdine will be followed by a match against the UCSB Gauchos before returning home to battle the Georgia State Panthers.
