Georgia Baseball weekly recap: Condon makes History as Dawgs’ win streak extends to eight

May 14, 2024 by Dawg Sports

Charlie Condon becomes the new NCAA single season BBCOR home run king as Georgia sweeps South Carolina

The Georgia Bulldogs completed another impressive series this past week against the South Carolina Gamecocks as the Dawgs earned their second straight series sweep. The Diamond Dawgs started the series with a bang on Thursday, as Charlie Condon gave Georgia a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as he brought in Corey Collins on an RBI double. A few batters later, Georgia would strike again as Tre Phelps launched a three-run homer into the Left Field seats to extend the Dawgs’ lead to 4-0.

The Dawgs would keep their offense going in the following inning as Corey Collins would hit a two-run homer, bringing in Fernando Gonzalez to put Georgia’s lead at 6-3. Georgia’s big inning would not end there though as Charlie Condon would step up to the plate the following at-bat and crush his record breaking 34th home run on the season. Condon’s 34th homer extended his home run streak to eight straight games along with making him the NCAA single season home run king in the BBCOR era.

Charlie Condon. History maker.

The Dawgs would add on some more insurance runs in the 5th, 6th, and 7th inning as Fernando Gonzalez and Tre Phelps would both homer to pull away from the Gamecocks and give Georgia the 14-10 game one win.

The Dawgs would pick right back up from where they left off in game one as Georgia was absolutely dominant in game two. Slate Alford would get the bats fired up in the third inning as he blasted his 14th homer on the season for a three-run homer into Center Field to give the Dawgs a 3-1 lead.

The Dawgs would continue to crush the ball in the third and fourth inning as Tre Phelps roped his third homer of the series to give Georgia a 10-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth as it was pure domination from the Dawgs.

The Dawgs pitching staff would be excellent as well in this one as Leighton Finley and Brian Zeldin combined for thirteen total strikeouts while also giving up just eight hits as South Carolina would be no match once again as Georgia sealed the 11-5 game two win.

The Dawgs would go for the series sweep and their eighth straight win on Saturday as Georgia once again showed zero signs of slowing down. Tre Phelps would get things started in the top of the first as the Freshman continued his dominant series by hitting a thunderous shot into Left Field as it was his fourth home run of the series to put the Dawgs up 1-0.

South Carolina would get their offense going in the bottom of the third as they put together a four run inning to give themselves their first lead of the series by a score of 4-1. A few innings later, the Dawgs would start battling back as Slate Alford would hit a 2-run homer to cut the Gamecocks’ lead down to 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The tied ball-game would not last too long though as the Gamecocks would jump back up in the seventh as Ethan Petry would hit a 2-RBI double to put South Carolina back up 6-4 going into the eighth. South Carolina looked as if they were going to finally get a win in the series and bring Georgia’s win streak to an end but the Gamecocks would quickly learn the Dawgs weren’t down without a fight. Georgia would proceed to explode for six runs in the eighth inning as Fernando Gonzalez and Kolby Branch notched RBIs in the inning with Logan Jordan capping things off with a massive grand slam to give the Dawgs a 10-6 lead.

Georgia would continue to tack on runs in the ninth as Corey Collins would hit a three run shot in to give the Dawgs the 14-6 lead and the eventual win as it would be all the runs they would need as Georgia completed another series sweep against the Gamecocks.

The Diamond Dawgs now sit at 38-12 on the season with a 16-11 record in SEC play as they are now knocking on the door of the top ten in the National Rankings. Georgia will now return to Athens and get ready for the Florida Gators for a three game regular season series finale that will begin on Thursday.
