Georgia Baseball weekly recap: Dawgs drop 2 out of 3 against Texas A&M as they fall to 10-11 in SEC play

April 29, 2024 by Dawg Sports

Condon claims school home run record as Georgia drops series against the Aggies

The Georgia Baseball team kicked off a tough week of play this past Tuesday against the fourth ranked Clemson Tigers at Foley Field as it was the biggest non-conference match-up the Dawgs have had all season. Georgia would strike first in this one as Paul Toetz would hit an RBI single into Center Field as it brought in Kolby Branch to give the Dawgs an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers would respond with runs of their own in the third and fourth inning as Clemson held a 3-1 lead all the way up until the seventh inning. Georgia would draw closer in the seventh inning as Dylan Goldstein would score on a Corey Collins single to put things at 3-2. Corey Collins would come through for the Dawgs once again in the bottom of the ninth as he hit a huge game tying single as he would bring in Trey King to put things at 3-3 going into extra innings. A few innings would go by before either team would earn the winning run as both teams were running out of arms as twenty total pitchers took the mound between the two teams. At last, Georgia would earn the winning run by the way of a passed ball in the fifteenth inning to capture the 4-3 win.

Following the win, the Diamond Dawgs packed up and made their way to College Station to take on the number one ranked Texas A&M Aggies for a three game series. The Diamond Dawgs would earn the first run in game one as Charlie Condon launched a solo home run into Left Field as he drew closer to the UGA career home run record.

Texas A&M would quickly respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to notch things up at 1-1. The Aggies would add on another run in the fourth as they held a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning. Georgia’s lineup wouldn’t allow the Aggies to hold onto the lead for long though as Dylan Goldstein roped a solo shot into Right Field to put the score at 2-2.

Georgia would be unable to put together anymore offense following the fifth inning though as the Dawgs’ bullpen would be unable to keep things at bey as the Aggies would continue to put up runs and would eventually earn the 5-2 win over Georgia.

Game two would be a part of a double-header Saturday as it was a very disappointing game for the Dawgs. Georgia originally got off to a tremendous start as they exploded in the first inning with nine runs as Charlie Condon capped off the inning with his record tying 53rd career home run to give the Dawgs a 9-0 lead.

Those nine runs should have been enough to earn the win for the Dawgs as it would be the only runs Georgia would score that day. Unfortunately, Georgia’s pitching staff struggled tremendously in game two as the Dawgs’ pitchers gave up a total of nineteen runs as Texas A&M earned the seventh inning run rule win by a final score of 19-9.

Georgia would have to immediately move on from the beat-down loss as they desperately needed to win game three to avoid the series sweep. The Aggies started quickly in game three as they earned runs in the first and third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Texas A&M would hold that 2-0 lead until the seventh inning until Kolby Branch crushed a solo homer for the Dawgs to put the score at 2-1.

The Dawgs would continue to launch the long ball in the seventh inning as Tre Phelps hit a two run shot into Left Field to give Georgia a 3-2 lead. The homers would not stop there though as Charlie Condon capped things off with the third home run in the inning for the Dawgs as it was a historic one. Condon passed Gordon Beckham on UGA’s all time home run list with the 54th home run of his career and his 29th of the season to give Georgia the 5-2 lead.

The five runs attributed by Georgia’s offense would be all the Dawgs would need as they avoided the three game sweep by a final score of 5-4.

The Diamond Dawgs now sit at a still impressive 31-12 record on the season along with a 10-11 record in SEC play. Georgia will now get a couple of days of rest before heading over to play the in state Kennesaw State Owls on Tuesday. Following the game against the Owls, Georgia will travel back to Athens and get ready to host the eleventh ranked Vanderbilt Commodores for what is sure to be a huge three game series as game one is set to begin on Friday night.
