ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit.

Another week of college football is in the books, which means it’s time for another edition of Kirk Herbstreit’s weekly rankings.

After each slate of weekend games, the ESPN college football analyst takes to Twitter to rank the best programs in the country. On Sunday morning, after a wild Week 5 came to a close, Herbstreit was back with his picks for the top six teams so far this year.

Here’s what he wrote down:

  1. Alabama
  2. Georgia
  3. Iowa
  4. Cincinnati
  5. Penn State
  6. Oklahoma

Here we go!
First week of October.

Alabama continued to hold the top spot in the rankings after an impressive showing against No. 12 Ole Miss. The Crimson Tide defense was able to slow down a high-powered Rebels attack and win 42-21, after jumping out to a 28-0 halftime lead.

Georgia also impressed against a different top-15 team in the country, by downing Arkansas 37-0. Even without J.T. Daniels at quarterback, the Bulldogs were able to move the ball against the No. 8 Razorbacks and get the win at home.

Iowa took the field on Friday night against a potential upset candidate in Maryland. However, the Hawkeyes forced seven turnovers in a 51-14 rout, earning them the third spot in Herbstreit’s latest rankings.

Cincinnati made a major leap in the minds of many on Saturday with a strong performance against Notre Dame in South Bend. The Bearcats have solidified their resume and now just need to get through the bulk of AAC play over the next few months.

Penn State landed in Herbstreit’s next spot looking in following a comfortable shutout of Indiana. The Nittany Lions will have a huge chance to boost their position nationally next week in Iowa City when they take on the Hawkeyes.

Oklahoma rounded out Herbstreit’s Week 5 rankings after getting pushed to the brink by Kansas State. The Sooners may be undefeated, but have struggled to dominate weaker opponents so far this season.

Herbstreit’s rankings should be on par with this week’s AP poll, as each of these six teams has solidified themselves among the country’s top programs this year. Time will tell if each one can stay there.
