There’s still a lot of football left to be played, but Alabama looked awfully sharp against Georgia in the first half of the SEC Championship.
Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe completed 6-of-12 pass attempts for 110 yards with two touchdowns. Roydell Williams chipped in with 41 rushing yards on eight carries.
If Alabama manages to defeat Georgia this Saturday, that would undoubtedly shake up the College Football Playoff picture.
With that said, let’s envision what the CFP would look like in this scenario.
1. Michigan
Obviously, Michigan has to take care of its own business in order to make the CFP. A loss to Iowa would be unacceptable, especially since Jim Harbaugh is back on the sideline.
That being said, Michigan has looked dominant all season long. If that continues in the Big Ten Championship, the Wolverines should be ranked No. 1 come Sunday.
2. Washington
This is where things get interesting. Washington might not receive as much hype as programs like Alabama and Georgia, but the school’s body of work this year is so impressive.
At 13-0, Washington deserves to be the No. 2 ranked team in the country. Last night’s win over Oregon proved how dangerous the Huskies can be, especially when Michael Penix Jr. is playing at a high level.
3. Alabama
When Alabama lost its second game of the season to Texas, the belief in Tuscaloosa was that Nick Saban’s squad had no margin for error. And yet, that didn’t bother the Crimson Tide.
A win over Georgia would prove to the selection committee that Alabama can hang with any team in the country. It would also erase the damage done by Texas on Sept. 9.
4. Georgia
Honestly, Georgia doesn’t deserve to make the CFP if it loses to Alabama. We want to make that abundantly clear. However, we don’t believe the committee will leave the two-time defending champions out over a loss to the Crimson Tide.
Florida State and Texas would be more deserving of a trip to the CFP, but it’s hard to see the No. 1 team from this week’s rankings drop out of the top four in a span of 24 hours.
