The College Football Playoff committee didn’t choose Georgia for this year’s field because of their loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.
Still, even after yesterday’s semifinal games, there are plenty of people who think the Bulldogs were one of the four “best” teams in the country, with SEC commissioner Greg Sankey being one of them.
Sankey said as much on SEC Network today, via Go CoffeeTown’s Wes Blankenship.
“I think Georgia was one of the four best teams throughout the year, and I still do”

I know, you’re shocked he would say that

Based off the eye test, Sankey has a case. Georgia was the two-time defending national champions and went 12-0 in the regular season with four wins over ranked opponents.
The Bulldogs then destroyed an undermanned Florida State squad in the Orange Bowl, 63-3, which is an epic beatdown even considering the opt-outs and injuries on the Seminoles side.
One of the four “best” teams? Georgia almost certainly was. However, their resume didn’t make them one of the four most “deserving” squads because of their loss to Alabama.
Then again, Florida State was more “deserving” of a bid on paper than the Crimson Tide, but their personnel losses were counted against them, so maybe Georgia should have been in this whole time.
There was just no way the committee could have included them without a massive uproar though.
