Changes are reportedly afoot in Athens.
Per The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, a pair of UGA football coaches have decided to step down from their posts “to pursue other opportunities.” Reposting a report out of Georgia:
Special teams coordinator Scott Cochran and offensive analyst Darrell Dickey have resigned to pursue other opportunities, the team announced Wednesday.
Kirk Benedict, who served on Kirby Smart’s staff as a special teams analyst the last two seasons, will be promoted to special team’s coordinator.
‘I want to thank Scott and Darrell for their contributions to Georgia football. We wish them the best moving forward,” Smart said.
As Emerson notes, “Cochran was Nick Saban’s longtime strength and conditioning coordinator before rejoining Kirby Smart before the 2020 season as special teams coordinator. Cochran stepped away for personal reasons before the 2021 season, then returned after the season in an off-field role.”
Losing coaches is certainly a blow to any major college football program; especially one as competitive as Georgia. The Dawgs already seem to have their coordinator candidate in-house and will likely seek out another offensive analyst to add some more eyes and ears to what they’d like to do on that side of the ball.
UGA just missed out of the College Football Playoff last year after losing to Bama in the SEC Championship Game. Kirby’s Bulldogs will be looking to bounce back in a big way in 2024.
