Where were you on the evening of November 30, 2013? If you’re like me you were probably watching the Georgia Bulldogs escape with a double overtime victory over Georgia Tech to complete an 8-4 regular season. And then, you watched this happen in the Iron Bowl:
In the long and storied history of Auburn football reaching up its collective rear and pulling out a proverbial gold nugget, this play was the apex. It feels at once like something pulled from the depths of the college football vault and as if it happened just yesterday.
At least it felt like yesterday until I recently heard this news:
Extremely Blessed to receive an offer from Auburn University @AuburnFootball @CoachHughFreeze @CoachKellyAU @coachcrimedawg @chris11au @HuskyFast @joshfloydHT @CoachECarroll pic.twitter.com/6NtCDCmb91
— Chris (CJ) Davis III (@Ceejdavis3) May 20, 2024
Yes, Chris “CJ” Davis, III, the son of Chris Davis, Jr., who eleven …..short?….years ago returned that kick 100 yards for a touchdown and aged Nick Saban by a solid 4 months in only 15 seconds recently received an offer to play college football at Auburn.
To be fair CJ is a rising high school freshman in the class of 2028, so there’s every reason to think that Auburn will go through at least two head coaches before he even arrives on the Plains. But as college football prepares for the first season in almost two decades without Nick Saban, and the first in over three decades without SEC divisional play, it’s still a poignant reminder that time, like an Auburn player moving inexplicably toward in improbable touchdown, matches on. Until later….
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
