Breaking: Falcons “Still Willing” to Pull Blockbuster Trade Trigger – 3 Possible Fits

September 12, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Atlanta Falcons might still be in the market of being sellers this 2025 regular season, and they could be willing to trade backup quarterback Kirk Cousins. According to a report, the team still has the door open for a Cousins trade, but the only complication is their asking price. After losing his job to youngster, Michael Penix Jr., Cousins hasn’t seen the field as the starting signal-caller. If there is a team that is in dire need of a quarterback in the next few weeks, then they might be able to accept the price that the Falcons are looking for.

It’s actually pretty smart that they’re holding onto Cousins for when the moment comes. There were rumors earlier this offseason that the team may release him, but since they’re in a rebuilding phase under Penix, they’re trying to recoup as much draft capital as they can. Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the former Michigan State product began his career with the Washington Commanders, taking over the starting job due to Robert Griffin III’s injury. The rest was history for Cousins as he was a viable signal-caller with the Vikings and later became a member of the Falcons, hoping to start out as the long-term quarterback for the Falcons.

However, things didn’t work the way he wanted. Despite recording 3,508 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, the former four-time Pro Bowler might be better off elsewhere for one more run.

Potential Destinations

San Francisco 49ers

With the 49ers’ starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, nursing two injuries, the team will be forced to start Mac Jones for their upcoming matchup. This is a huge blow to the offense as the season is just getting started and the 49ers’ injury bug continues to bite. Jones is still an adequate signal-caller in the right situation, but when the team wants to push for postseason contention, he might not be able to get the job done. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan might have to call up an old friend from his Washington days and bring Cousins to San Francisco if Purdy plans to miss more time.

While Purdy will probably be back in two weeks, it’s something to monitor as the season progresses. Cousins knows Shanahan more than ever, and these two could form one of the most chemistry-based duos in a long time in this league.

Carolina Panthers

Depending on what happens with quarterback Bryce Young in the next few weeks, the team could be on the lookout for a signal-caller trade market. Young is already coming off his worst game, even though it’s just Week 1. While they have the weapons in Xavier Legette, Jalen Coker and Tetairoa McMillan, Young still hasn’t been able to figure it out. However, Cousins could easily bring out the best in these young receivers if Young can’t.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints lost their Week 1 matchup as well, but not on the level of how the Panthers sustained it. Quarterback Spencer Rattler is not going anywhere, but when you share the same depth chart with Tyler Shough, there is room for improvement. Cousins could turn this team around and help them get back in the postseason for the first time in a while.
