Reliable as they come, McCullough gets some security in a new deal.
Football can be a game of niches, and no one fills a niche quite like a long snapper. On the roster for field goal tries, extra points, and punts, your snapper has to be able to reliably deliver a ball to a holder or punter over and over and over again, dozens of times per season and hundreds if not thousands of times over the course of a career. It’s a job that only gets noticed when something goes wrong.
How do you know Liam McCullough is a good one? Aside from a tackle attempt on special teams, ask yourself the last time you noticed that he was on the roster. The former Raiders undrafted free agent joined the Falcons in 2022 and has served as their long snapper since, and after a couple of small miscues in his first season, has essentially disappeared from our consciousness in the way a quality long snapper should.
Now the Falcons are rewarding that work with a new four year deal, which McCullough announced last night on social media.
God is good, Jesus saves. Grateful for every opportunity the Lord has brought me, for new relationships, renewed relationships, and for the family, friends, and teammates that enable me to do what I do. There’s every reason to believe McCullough will play out that deal. The team’s previous long snapper, the beloved Josh Harris, is still going strong with the Chargers after serving as Atlanta’s choice for a decade, and McCullough has been a reliable snapper and willing special teams tackler his entire time here. Stability on special teams is a wonderful thing, and with some question marks around Younghoe Koo and the return game, it’s nice to know the Falcons can rely on McCullough.
It’s far from the splashiest signing the Atlanta Falcons will make this offseason, but long snapping is an important niche and one McCullough has filled well. Congratulations are in order, and now we’ll wait to see who else the team will prioritize re-signing.
